  • Freewing Cripes A Mighty

Hey Guys, thought I'd share. I got some progress done on my Freewing rebuild still have more to do but done for the night. This is my first ever RC plane I bought and learned to fly over the winter on a frozen lake. Needless to say it has taken a pounding. I snapped it completely in half twice (fuselage breaks) hitting a tree (low temp hot glue and dowel fix) and broke the wing tips and other parts multiple times. Snapped the landing gear out with part of the wing landing hard on ice lol!!It has a lot of battle scares and was in need of a lot of light spackle and a repaint. I figured that its was time to try and make it look a lil nicer since I have "Old Crow" to fly as a supplement. Although It looks rough it's still a great flyer and has held up well. Also a pic of my "Old Crow" w/freewing sound (I flew that a lot today and love it!!) and 800mm P-40 with a custom scheme.

If anyone is interested here are a couple Old Crow w/sound vids from Sunday. My buddy filmed a few for me. Of course nosed over on landings no damage but the soft wet ground and tall grass did take a retract cover off the left. Im thinking full flaps doesn't help curbing nose overs. Also a 800mm P-40 flight. Still learning every flight and loving it!

Hey ADker, looks good, I see you're using a 4 blade prop, is this the New version Freewing Old Crow with a four blade prop or a conversion?
      Gotta love that Merlin sound!!!!!!

Hey Grossman, still waiting on the four blade "Old Crow: spinner to come into stock, this was a conversion from "Iron Ass". I have yet to try the new 2 blade prop as I broke it before I could even get it out the door and they are not in stock either. I do want to try it though to see what the difference is.

On a side note I did buy Bud's signed book and has been keeping me busy on those windy days...lol

All finished or as good as good as I'm gonna get it. Did a re-maiden this morning and went well! Love these Freewings!

              They are something aren't they!

I'm so itching to fly mine, getting really close to putting her up.  The only thing that's keeping me is the uncertainty of how much  length she'll take up when she's landing.  How much throttle are you leaving on when you land??

I have been doing approaches at about half then when lined up for runway just gradually coming down some but try to let the throttle descend the plane. I am still working on landing these dang things lol. The gyro definitely improved my landings today, had some great landings with no nose dives. I also think that its so much easier on a longer landing area lot more forgiving.

                  Gman,

ADK's comments on his approach and throttle control is the same with me with the Iron Ass. I use 48% down on my flaps with 4 up elevator mixed in with the flaps down. For me, I've found out that if I have that good final approach speed, the up elevator mix with the flaps is just right where the descent rate and speed is where I'm controlling the descent by throttle(and maybe some pressure on elevator) and not having to use elevator till right before touchdown(if at all). Don't be bashful about feathering the throttle to control the angle of descent. If you depend on using the elevator to adjust the angle of descent on the last part of your approach, there is a much better chance that your plane will look like it's on a up and down roller coaster, compared to gentle up and down movement using the throttle.
I have a quarter throttle left when the wheels touch. Don't be in a hurray to bring the tail down.
Go to this very short video to see what I would recommend for area to take off and land at first.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2b-qKpicfNc This video was of my maiden take off with a 1100 Mustang. As you can see I didn't have enough right rudder when I got into the throttle. The Freewing can do that too.

I have a lot of great landings..BUT..every landing can/will be different. At first, you don't want the pressure of having to hit the landing area RIGHT ON. Or you'll '' hit this or that" That way you can concentrate on your speed and rate of descent.Have a landing area where you don't have to correct approach because of hazards.

One more thing.  Don't be hesitant on aborting a landing. I believe I have saved myself many bad landings by telling myself "This doesn't feel/look good" Power up and do it again! And more times than not....ahhhh, yes, there we go....and grease the landing :)

                  Gee....I'm talking and talking......

Thanks guys, I'm sure you can understand my apprehension with all the time and bucks I've got in Old Crow!
I've got a gyro on its way and I broke down and bought one for each of the other Mustangs as well.
Short of a side street, there isn't a lot of fields available.  I'm going to take a drive to the nearby town of Cowley where there's supposed to be another field, so Ill see if I can find it.
Short of that, Powell, which is about 20 minutes drive, where I maidened P-2.
The thing about that field is that it can be dead calm here and blowing there.  Aw the joy!!!
