  • Fms p-51 1450mm motor upgrade need help

Anybody upgrade to the 550 Olympus motor if so how many cells are you running with it now. Any help would be great. Looking to get more speed out of my plane but don't want to do any damage. I have upgraded esc so just need to know Lipo size? Thanks

The 4258 550KV from the Olympus is designed for 5-6 cells. I run 5 cell and the prop mod and love the results. I recommend a 100 amp ESC to cover 6 cell requirements.

You should check out the P-51D and P-51B threads over on RC Groups. There is a lot of helpful info and fliers who have done this.

The prop mod involves placing small lengths of zip tie material between the spinner back plate and the leading edge of the prop blades to increase their pitch. It increases speed at the cost of a slightly heavier drain on the batteries and more load on the motor. The Olympus motor will handle it no problem. Google "FMS P-51 prop mod" and you'll see what it is all about.

Here is the P-51D version 8 thread. Take some time and read through the last 30 to 40 pages. It is worth it.

I'm SOOOO happy with my upgrade to my FW Iron Ass. 85a ESC, prop mod and 5s. Plan on having some video of her flying by next week sometime.  Just received the Mobius I ordered from MRC.
