  • Legend Models 83" P-38 Lightning

I am a huge P-38 fan and I've had my share of P-38 foamies over the years.  I love their flying characteristics and looks as much if not more than any warbird I can think of.

I finally tired of waiting for a super scale P-38 foamie to hit the market so I discovered a wood/composite P-38 on the market with full fowler flaps and a really nice size at 83".  The Legend Models P-38 (used to be the VQ) is a nice fairly scale P-38 that isn't foamie cheap by any means but is a good next step up before you hit the Yellow Aircraft or Ziroli class which can run $5K+ easy turn key.

My buddy built her for me.  Took him 52 hours.  I added scale details going with close-to-scale-sized wheels with the forward nose strut rake.  (Drives me NUTS when I see RC model P-38's with tiny struts sticking straight down on tiny wheels, bleck!)  Full Robart electric retract system, Castle Phoenix Edge 100A ESCs, Dualsky 470Kv motors running two Admiral 5S 4000 mAh 60C LiPo's swinging two Counter Rotating Master Airscrew 16x10x3's that I rounded the tips for a more scale look.

I maidened over Memorial Day Weekend.  I took it to a large parking lot to make sure I had plenty of runway.  The flight went great!  The second flight was last weekend at the local school I normally fly at.  That also went really well.  The flap mechanism is very sloppy and still needs work (you will notice the inboard port flap not all the way up) but doesn't seem to have any noticeable adverse affect in the air thankfully.

I painted the nose/fuse and invasion stripes and used Callie Graphics for the decals and nomenclature.  I also cut out holes in the side radiators, custom made the turbos and side radiator intakes (the ones that came with the NARF were terrible looking) and added screen mesh to all the intakes and added the antenna like the FS.  Overall, I am really pleased with how she turned out.

Here's the video and some photos!  Crossing my fingers that someone makes a super scale foamy P-38 one day!

(I added a Memorial Day Tribute in with the maiden video that is worth watching that starts at the 5:50 mark)

Man that's Sweeet Aros. Love P38s but a project like that is a little beyond my skill level. Again that's one beautiful bird.

Been watching this on the RCG forum and it is quite an impressive build!

She looks fantastic! Congrats on the maiden, though I'd be scared sh*tless to fly in a built up area like that, I'd be too worries bout hitting something I'd probably crash!

I too hope that someone comes out with a decent large scale P-38 someday, such a badass airplane all around I wouldn't hesitate for a second to add one to the collection.

Thanks farmflyer! I bet you could fly her just fine. These heavy P-38's are so tame in the air it's silly. Of course the Pucker Factor rises exponentially but once you're in the air they are just well flying birds. The build is another thing...If it wasn't for my buddy, I would never have the opportunity to own and fly these giant warbirds. I don't have the tools, skill or patience to build these larger NARFs so I am very grateful for his willingness to build them for me.

Thanks SOB8604! Yeah I ain't gonna lie, I was as nervous and as puckered as I have ever been for a maiden. My hands were so sweaty I had to stop the takeoff several times just to wipe my hands off so my radio wouldn't slip! There was a motorcycle training club parallel to the parking lot so I was hyper-conscious of them, making sure I never flew over them or near them.

Someday I am going to find a Yellow or Zirolli for sale at the perfect time and snag one. Just don't ask me where I would fly it! :D

                Beautiful Aros!
It's a shame there isn't a great foamy P38 out there somewhere for the rest of us warbird fanatics.  If it isn't to most unique shape for a fighter, then its got to be in the top 5 or so.
Great thing about flying her is you always know which plane is yours in the air!

What an awesome bird you've put together. I am a fan of the P-38 uniqueness as well. I still have the last FMS P-38 Lightning "Marie", but have still not maidened her yet. It sat in the box for 2 years, and i finally put her together a few months ago.

Were there issues with the FMS set-up? I'm wondering why they discontinued it?

Thanks! Well it is quite the rat's nest when putting together but she flies great and you will love her! Not sure why FMS discontinued...

Thanks Aros, I am in the middle of my build of the silver bird. This is the most complex build Iv had, the flaps literally took a half day just to adjust properly, and now wiring the ESC's and Motors. I am going to run on 8s powering 360kv motors, what power set up do you have?

RE: Legend Models 83" P-38 Lightning

Awesome! Yeah the flaps are a real (insert swear word here)! I still don't have them 100% dialed because there is so much slop to the mechanism it's not worth the battle quite honestly.

I went with two Master Airscrew 16x10x3's (that I rounded the tips for more scale appearance which makes them closer to 15.5"), Dualsky 470Kvs, Admiral 5S 4000 Pros and Castle 100A ESCs.

I know I would get more speed with smaller props but I love the look of the large 3-blades. She's very scale looking in the air so I am satisfied.

Post a video of your maiden when you get the chance!
