HELP! Apprentice will not enter NORMAL mode

I have an apprentice that I would like to fly WITHOUT the gyro! I have the manual and it tells how to do that but no matter what I do, the Gyro is always active. Any ideas?

AS3x remains active in all modes, it can't be turned off without a special program cable and programming interface (not sure if the Apprentice RX has that ability). SAFE has 3 modes and is controlled by a switch on the transmitter.
