FMS 1400mm Trojan

I haven't flown my FMS T-28 in well over a year.  New planes come along and old favorites are left hanging from the ceiling.

A friend called this morning and asked if I'd like to go fly a little bit since we both had a rare Monday morning off.  As I was deciding what to take, I saw the Trojan and decided to get re acquainted. 

It flies even better than I remember and lands like it is on rails.  It will not be another year before it goes to the flying field again. 

My Trojan is covered with Oracal vinyl and lettered as a plane used at the Edwards AFB Test Pilot School in the '50s.  My buddy was able to get a few shots of it today.

Wow! Nicely done. Ive always wanted to learn how to use the vinyl covering and spice up 1 or 2 of my planes. Awesome job!

Your Oracal application is among the best I've seen on foam planes. Well done! What is your next project with Oracal?

Alpha, I'm thinking of wrapping a Dynam WACO to approximate the Travel Air Pepsi-Cola biplane as my next project.

The D4D? Great choice of modeling subject! That bird was designed by Mr. Cessna, Mr. Beech, AND Mr. Stearman as a collaborative project. Amazing that all three men had their hand in the aircraft.

That's the plane!  Decals are ordered from Callie and I have the vinyl on hand.  Hope to get started on it soon.  This will be one of my most ambitious wraps so far.

However, the T-28, which was one of my early wrap jobs, is one that really sold me on the vinyl covering as opposed to painting foam.

Wvrailfan, it would be awesome if you could share your skill set and know-how of vinyl wrapping. Is there a way for to do a small "how-to" video? I am really in awe of your T-28 job!

Does anyone else want to see how he does it?

worked on navy t 28's for 4 years at nas whiting field ..love the orange and white paint job.....didn't relize how easy it is to see the plane when flying.....just a really nice flying airplane

I was in the USN at Mayport naval station 73-74. When my ship was in port one evening we were tied up next to the carrier pier. There was a practice runway right next to it at that time. All of a sudden you could hear the roar of radial engines overhead. The sky was soon filled with T-28s. They were painted  orange and white. They put on outstanding show practicing touch and go's for the next hour. I was impressed with their skills. There was an outline of a carrier deck painted on the runway. The real treat was that they landed when they were done. I walked over to the pilots and planes. They were impressive up close and the air crews were very friendly. Fast forward to the future and after years in RC I finalize realize a dream I had of owning a T-28. I just got my FMS T-28 from MotionRC. Flying season is almost at an end here in Minnesota. So I'll be adding a few updates over the winter such as Dave Brown tires & metal gear servo for nose steering since I fly of off grass.
I'll be putting the skis on my Flyzone Beaver soon. I flew it last winter using skis and floats. Lots of fun.  Hope the T-28 will be fun too!  :)

Larry, those are awesome memories to have! The T-28 is a really fun plane to own. Putting skis on it should be fun to see. Be sure to post a video of that when you do fly it. We have pretty much year-round flying here in Texas. We may get an occasional snow, but it's gone pretty quick. Other than the 2 months of cold weather we have, we don't really have to use skis. I've thought about getting a set for that "just-in-case" day.

I decided last winter to not put my planes away for the winter like usual and get out and fly. Well I got the Trojan balanced Saturday at 82mm. I had to remove some of the foam from the front of the battery tray like Pilot Ryan did in his Trojan mods video. I like to have them a little nose heavy for the first test flight.


Well now all I have to do is to wait for the weather to cooperate for the maiden flight. Three~four days of rain and wind then highs in the 30s.
