  • Clipped wing E-Flite P-51 1.5m

Has anyone done a conversion of the 1.5m P-51 from E-Flite into a clipped wing Reno air racer? I'm thinking about doing it to mine, but am curious if anyone had done this yet? I'm wondering how much the handling will change clipping the wings to be shorter. Would it put the model out of balance at all? My instinct says no as long as the wings are clipped perfectly even, but I really haven't been flying long enough to know for sure.

If anyone has thoughts on this, has done it in the past. I'd love to hear about it & or see some pictures.

    Thanks!

Well I went ahead and clipped the wings. I took 4 & 1/8th inches off from each side. It now has a wingspan of 1295mm.

I'll be test flying it tomorrow.

Gave the new clipped wing mustang a test flight this morning. It flew amazing!!!!! Stability & Overall handling didn't change hardly at all compared to it's stock form. This completely shocked me, but I am super happy how it turned out.

Here's a few quick pic's from this morning.

I'll be cleaning up the cuts and smoothing out everything on the plane as much as possible. Then i'll paint it up as the Precious Metal reno air racer p-51.

Years ago, when Parkzone (efl) came out with their 1st Mustang, I put on the whole Reno Air Race competition. We had all the various Mustangs and Corsairs and even converted a T-28 into Rare bear! Clipped wings and Turtledecks. Now that's what I'm talking about! Click image for larger version

How did you do your canopy on those planes? That's one thing i've been stuck on figuring out how to do. Need that real low flowing canopy on my setup and i just don't have a good idea yet on how to go about it.

I vacuum-formed it from a mold I made. Then glued it on and spackled the rear to blend with the fuselage. Lastly painted the rear to match. Unfortunately, mine would be a little small for 1.5m. Check for different racing canopies online tho. Sig makes a few, and maybe one would work for you. Look for a long thing one to match your plane. If you go a bit bigger, you can actually trim it down for height and length.

You might try contacting sparky over T park flyer plastics. He might be willing to make one for you

I bought a Mach one canopy for my 1400 FMS Mustang but it was lost to a midair with a friendly before I did the mod.
now I see Parkflyerplastics has this. https://parkflyerplastics.com/cart/i...roducts_id=850 Click image for larger version
