    Hello, I was wondering if anyone has this plane? I bought it and will fly it as a sport plane with moderate aerobatics and not a 3D plane.

    It calls for these servos:

    Hitec HS-5245 or Hitec HS 7245

    I really don't want to spend $40 per servo.

    Do you think I could use these servos instead?

    You are probably ok "derating" the servos like that if you do not plan to fly post stall 3D style maneuvers but will mainly be flying sport aerobatics. Just make sure that the servo dimensions are close. I briefly owned and flew that model, in much the style that you propose to fly it. An amazing airplane IMO! I passed it on to a pilot who DOES fly some pretty extreme maneuvers with it.

      You really don't want to go with less than the HS5245. The post stall work of 3D flying is actually less demanding on the servo for any given degree of motion as the air loads are less (less speed means less load). 3D aircraft are very demanding of servos not because they fly in the post stall condition but rather the control surfaces are huge.

      The HS 425BB is inadequate for controlling those huge surfaces. Even if you cut down the surface throw the resolution is not there. The model will appear to wander a lot (not fun to fly).

      The HS5245 has a digital amp and MOSFET output transistors. These two feature are worth the premium cost over the HS 425.

      On the subject of metal gears I like to use them on the rudder only as they are about the only thing that holds up to my ground loops. I like resin type gears for their longer wear properties.

      My opinion is that this model is too nice to use as a sport flier (everyday beater). Save it for when you skills are suitable for this class of ship. Then fit her out with the components appropriate for this class of model.

      I too don't see the need to use highly marketed brands. But $160 for servos in this class of ship seem more than appropriate!

      It is a gutless turd! Heavy and no power. Save your money spend it on a quality servo. I think the HS 425bb is an entry level servo meant for the "40" size trainer. (AKA something you can use to dig a ditch, while learning to fly) Definitely NOT something you want in any ship you cherish or want to use to improve your flying skills.

      The HS-5245MG has more power at 4.8V (4.4 kgcm) than the HS 425BB has at 6V and is a lot lighter at 32 grams.

        I know it's a cheap shot to say what is junk (poor fit) without offering an alternative.

        I've been using these for about 6 months with no failures, ether on the bench or in the air.

        I've gotten about a dozen of these from my local hobby shop. I believe that HK is selling a comparable servo under their Turnigy label.

        I have to admit I have some reservation about coreless motors, they are a bit fragile, but the lighter core (bird cage) makes them very responsive.

          I only have two flights in an Aerobeez plane, owned by Mark a friend of mine at my field. It was very responsive, fun to fly and the construction method is unique. His had all the stock recommended gear in it. I'd echo the sentiment that the model is best suited for full potential flying. As a scale flyer, it seems a bit of overkill. The main downsides to me were the foam, which is EPP and a bit rough, and the lack of spare parts according to the owner.

            It has a nice wood sub structure. It helps make it light. But it is not as durable as the EPO stuff MotionRC sells. This is why I said I would not use it as my everyday beater plane.

                I thought I’d post this for some perspective, mine more than anybody else’s.
                I’m showing the now standard “mini digital servo the HS-5245MG, the great Futaba of old the FP-3002 and my new favorite mini the Daviga DS313.


                Of note is the price on the Futaba this is in 1990 dollars $71.95! This is an analog amp, bushing output, cored motor, metal geared servo. The specs were/are an anemic 3.3 kgcm @6V with a snail speed of .2 sec/60° @6V. Weight wasn’t too bad at 35grams. This was my standard servo for my FAI F3D pylon racers at the time. An F3D racer is a plane with a 6.5cc engine spinning a prop between 27K to 32K rpm and can reach over 300 kph in the open.

                Today I’'d be happy to run the Daviga DS313 if it weren’'t for the coreless motor. This is something folks often forget to think about, and that is the application of the servo. Coreless motors are great in that they have little rotating mass this helps immensely with the stop start inertia and power demands on the output transistors. They are great for gyros and the like. But they are a lot more fragile than the standard cored motors. In an application like my old FAI F3D pylon racer were the vibration tends to destroy if not burn up a lot of things the coreless motor is not the best choice.

                So when a guy says XXX servo or any device failed and is junk ask for more details. 9 times out of 10 he is using the wrong component for the application.
