E-flite V900 ' Takeoff '
Anyone possibly have any input as to alternative options for Takeoff with the V900, besides for conventional hand launch? Just bought one and am a little nervous about flying it after reading all the 'left torque' problems people have encountered with this model. I personally was thinking about maybe a pedestal of sorts that was pitched to like 40-45% or so.

I just watched the Horizon promo video for this plane. It doesn't appear to be all that difficult to hand launch. I don't have this plane but I do have other very "torquey" hand launch planes and it seems to me that the torque effect is most pronounced when the pilot increases throttle as he throws it. The trick is to spool it up for a second or two before letting it go. It doesn't even need that much of an up angle. Also, since this plane has SAFE, launch it that way and the roll angle is limited. Something else that may help is to do a mix for "switch A" > ELE so that when you throw the gear switch, you have about 3 to 4 degrees of UP elevator. As soon as it's flying, switch it off, along with turning off SAFE. In this fashion, it's almost like planes with launch control. -

Additionally, the key component of an effective SAFE mode is to power it up on a level table and don't touch it for about 20 seconds so it knows where level is. Don't even bother with putting the canopy on. Just plug it in and leave it alone. If it's windy and the plane is being vibrated, hold it very still on the level. Then test it to make sure it is in SAFE mode. That's when you tilt the plane and the ailerons move to counter that movement and stays there as long as the plane is tilted. When you turn off SAFE, make sure you are not on the AIL stick or it may just suddenly roll upside down on your. SAFE makes for a very big arc when banking so maybe slow it down, too. Turn off SAFE before banking.Comment
