  • The Annual Wyoming Mustang Roundup 2023

A little late this year, but Dave Gee and Grossman56 got together with our P 51's for the Wyoming Mustang Roundup at our field north of Cody, Wyoming.

thanks for posting those, Dan. That was fun this morning doing the photoshoot. I think I got some decent in-air shots of your Big Beautiful Doll, but I neglected to tell you that my desktop computer crapped out and I'm working from my backup laptop that doesn't have all the capabilities for working with photos that the desktop does. As soon as I get my new computer back I should be able to post the pictures that I took that are worth uploading.

        Cheers

Cool! Looking forward to it. As I said, even with all the photos from Nefi, I still don't have any pics of BBD actually flying. Looking forward to seeing them. I wasn't real happy with the settings on my camera, I have to start using it more, as I said, the cellphone takes better pictures at the moment.

You guys have a very impressive squadron there. I've been in contact with Elbee and maybe you guys would be interested in a group build this winter? Waiting to see the flight photos.

            Best Regards, Rex

I saw some of them from Dave's camera screen, they look great from what I could see.
What we're both looking for is info on my neighbor's dad's P 51, The Ripper.

Hi Rex: hope you're doing well up in Indiana way. I reviewed some of the inflight photos I took of Dan's Big Beautiful Doll on a couple flights he did after our photoshoot. I think a few will be ok quality, I didn't have my biggest 600mm lens with me, so I couldn't get as "close" to the plane as I wanted to. But hopefully a few will be of ok quality to post here in a few days when I get my desktop computer rebuild back, hopefully later this week.

The owner of local company where I took my computer to is going to take a look at my 3D printer. It seems to be a software issue where some of the G-code files that need to transfer to the printer for some reason have not done so. Some do just fine, and those print up beautifully. But I need to get over this hump before I can really start printing my own stuff like Elbee does, well, maybe never as well as him, but I hope to at least jump in that water with both feet someday!

I'd be interested in joining in on some part of a group build this winter. I'm hoping most, if not all, of my NASM work will be done by then, and it would be nice to relax with friends (even if hundreds of miles from each other!) to do a group build on something that is interesting to all of us. That would be fun, for sure.

                Cheers

                  Davegee,

I haven’t purchased anything yet but Elbee has his new FL B-25 and we are thinking of adding scale details and different paint schemes to them. Each model would be to our own version and details but having a group discussion, sharing ideas, 3-d printing details ect. would make the winter months move along faster. I had more fun last winter detailing my Corsair with everyone’s advice than I have had just building on my own. Made mistakes but learned a lot on weathering and working on foam planes. Planning on adding working cowl flaps on the Corsair this winter. Elbees design but using springs to open and close with the airflow. I won’t have to do major surgery to add.

We are planning on the B-25 but Elbee has other planes and I haven’t bought mine yet so throw out your suggestion and we will see.
                  Best Regards, Rex

Hi Rex: the B-25 would be fine. I’d really like to do one of the Doolittle Raiders, but it would be quite an overhaul from a J to a D version. Something to ponder, I guess.

Sure wish they had some other new planes. Nothing against the B-25, but would like to see other possibilities. But if everyone else wants the B-25, I’d throw in with that.

                    Cheers

                      Davegee,

They have a B-25 in the Air Force museum set up like the Doolittle raiders. I think it’s a B model with the turret set further back on the fuselage. I am going to Ohio the end of September so I will check. I want to do a S.pacific version so I can dirty it up. I need to research which plane but would like to keep the glass nose.
I too am hoping FL brings out a Zero,SBD or? Never had a scale twin yet but this would probably be stable and fly well from reports on this sight.
Sorry to hear you’re having problems with your 3-d printer and hope it is an easy fix. Hate it when you buy a new machine and it doesn’t work right. Spent a lot of my traveling days working on new machines that didn’t perform to spec. Usually a minor error but makes you pull your hair out.
Hopefully Grossman might join in a winter build too

Wouldn’t it be cool if Flightline made a 1600mm B model mustang to go with all those other beauties

Hi Rex: if you could do me a favor and take a bunch of pics of the Doolittle Raider at the USAF museum, that would be most appreciated, especially parts of that B model (you’re probably right that it was a B model) that I would have to modify from the new kit to make it accurate.

If I decide it’s too much work to do that, I might keep it a J-model and find an interesting historical plane and crew to model. Thanks if that is possible.

Hi Gilatrout: yeah, I think Elbee and I would be all over that one, especially if it came with a Malcolm Hood canopy! I recently completed a 1/32 scale plastic model of a Mustang III RAF airplane painted up in the colors of Polish ace Eugenieuz Horbacziewski for an upcoming display at the NASM in Washington, DC. THAT is the one I would do if they come out with a B model. Fingers crossed!!

Yep, my B model was conspicuously missing, she's sitting in parts downstairs and I think that will be my winter project. The biggest challenge will be to come up with a way to mate the fuse to the wings as the plastic pieces that were in the fuse have disappeared. Shot of that, I want to split the forward fuse and secure the motor mount or replace it if there is damage. I just have to have a B model again and I'm tired of waiting for MRC. We don't need another Avanti-like jet. We need a P 51B!

Hi Dan: just got my desktop back late yesterday afternoon. I have a very basic photoshop app at the moment with very little zoom capability that I tried working two pics this morning. I thought I had posted them earlier today, but I might not have actually pushed the button to send them. They might have ended up in another thread, not sure.

These two aren't great, but will do for the moment. I think with my 600mm lens (which I didn't have with me for the roundup) and if we can get the plane doing some lower passes a little closer to the camera, I think we can get some really good ones. Let's plan on meeting sometime on your days off soon to do some more pics.

                                  Cheers
