  • Official RocHobby 1030mm Waco Thread

I've eyed this bipe for a long time and finally pulled the trigger last week and snagged it. Between the gorgeous scale appeal and reviews, I couldn't take it anymore and had to snag her up. The build was fairly easy but the wire rigging is laborious BUT OH SO WORTH IT!!

And yes I used to pronounce Waco "Way-co" until someone corrected me (it's "Wah-co" so now I can't say the name without thinking tacos, so she's lovingly now my "Waco Taco").

As good as she looks without the rigging, she looks phenomenal with it and is every bit worth the trouble (and reading glasses if you swing that way). I don't have fat fingers (well maybe when I fly sometimes, lol) but I tend to have trouble manipulating the micro small parts in the hobby. The wiring definitely tested my mettle - and patience.

CG is 85mm and flies beautifully at the recommended. Just such a well-mannered, sweet flyer...And did I mention how good she looks? :D

My biggest complaint is the size. If this girl was a 1500mm+...Wow. I may have to go look for a composite, large scale version.

If you love bipes, and love that old school appeal, you would have a hard time not falling in love with this one. Light as can be, fits in any vehicle and a total park flyer that doesn't make your knees wobbly when you fly her. I haven't read much about the Dynam version, I'm sure that's a good one too, but I liked how the RocHobby version looked a little better in photos. She's one photogenic bird!

Good looking plane, I've had my eye on it for a while too, just wish it was a little bigger....

      She can be temperamental!
Just beware of her penchant for flipping over on her back like a dead bug!!
Anyway, She is a good ship once you figure out the CG and how to keep the plastic gear struts on. I even figured a way to get a gyro in her.
You may want to consider dressing up the motor as well as they did such a nice detailed job of it.

Nice touch to the spinner Dan! Not sure what you mean about the dead bug part? She tends to be snappy in rolls for sure but most bipes are. You have to add rudder in the rolls or it gets too snappy in a heart beat. Nothing bad, just typical bipe characteristics.

Other than that, on calm conditions this girl is a fantastic, easy flyer that looks about as good as any plane I have ever flown.

when landing, mine will get down on the ground and tuck her nose down and flip over on her back. Don't know why, other than maybe she figures that's the way she's supposed to land 'cause that's how she has up 'til now. Your right though, they are a great flying little plane although I would have preferred a little bit bigger as she's limited in when she can fly out here.

Interesting, I haven't had that issue yet...

As for size, I keep clicking my heels together and hoping when I go out to the garage the next day she will grow into a 1800mm. No luck yet. ;)

I now have the E-flite UMX Waco, the Rochobby Waco, the Dynam Waco, and a Waco I've had for so long, I don't remember the brand name. I painted the UMX Waco engine cowel blue, but left the bumps white. I painted the Dynam Waco cowel black and my on design in black on the yellow. I'm going to paint my Rochobby Waco red with black trim, much like the older taper wing Waco. No photos yet. I guess I'm wacko over Waco's! :Silly: Wish someone would do a taper wing version...Really pretty!!! Doc

I've had one for a couple of years now and I love it. It took a bit of getting used to because of the left torque and short tail moment it loves to ground loop on asphalt if you don't watch your throttle input. I also installed a A-3 gyro in it for those windy days, works great. Over all its a thing of beauty when it's in the Air and it comes with me most of the time when I fly. Going to get the Dynam Waco next. I love biplanes and warbirds.

I think the RocHobby Waco is a great scale looking ship, but wanted a bigger one. Something that would fly with the classic speed and grace of this grand old bird.
Oh, and the pilot must have a scarf tied with a "Hollywood" knot, especially while flying a big ol' barrel roll.

So, I set up a Great Planes Waco YMF5 with a DLE 35RA and have a sweetie of an airframe. It's not so electric but does put smiles on faces anyway.

Only drawback to the Dynam Waco... No wires. I really want to add wires to mine, but a LOT of extra work! Hope I'm not getting tired of scale detailing.:(Doc

As stated before, I retired my Waco after the last flight. As my knowledge base grew, I figured out why I was having landing problems, the battery was too far forward. When I slid it back and flew her, it was great. The last flight, the plastic cabanes finally had had enough and snapped, they just got too brittle out here in the dry Wyoming climate and gave out. True to herself, she spun in and landed on a pile of sage with minimal damage. This plane never dies!! This was after one of the greatest flights I'd had with her as well. she gave me that and then said'"retire me!" so I did, pieced her back together again and she looks great but her and Ol' Weedwacker are Hangar Queens now. They both have contributed enormously to my ability has a pilot. Click image for larger version
