Man, oh man.
I am having The World’s Toughest Time trying to get my Freewing P51D to get off the build bench and get into the air.
My problem is the gear. I can’t seem to get it to work in any consistent fashion. It was jumping and wobbling around, so I hit ithe worm drive with a little white lithium grease. Almost immediately afterward the jumpiest gear refused to engage and the gear got hung up, refusing to move.
I took it apart to see if the drive had stripped- it seemed pretty sloppy, so much so that the teeth on the screw refused to engage the flappy pawl that moves the gear inboard and out.
I figured that maybe the lithium grease made the whole thing too slippery, so I cleaned it off, but that never resolved the problem.
I ordered new retract, getting it today. I replaced the gear and got function back with the airframe upside down… when I turned the airframe right-side up, the OTHER gear started jumping around, and my new gear just stopped retracting against gravity. I have to push it to close it .
I tried cycling the gear 7-8 times, and the jumpy original gear just failed like the other one, and the new gear can’t even pick itself up.
Keep in mind that the airframe has not left the build bench yet! Not one flight!
Are these gear useless? Can you damage a gear by spraying a little lube on it? What are the chances that a completely new replacement is bad?
Can I get gear made by someone else, something that will actually function? Maybe the FMS P-47?
