  • Beaver Rudders

Hey all looking for some help . I have recently gotten the Flyzone Beaver and the rudders seem very tight . They are not stiff but I can't get them to pull back straight . Has anyone else had this happen or have an idea ? I tried to tighten the rubber bands but not really helping . I also have a can of White Grease but not sure if it will damage the foam .

    Thanks Bryan

I had to take them apart and lightly sand the shafts (300 grit). They work well, now. I replaced the rubber bands with light springs, and the monofiliment with light guage wire. Works great and looks good! Doc

That sounds good . Did you pull them from the foam or will they come apart .

I have the same problem, I am planning on getting together with Lon and check out his rudder solution.

This setup has worked well for me. I did have one time where the right rudder stuck in the right turn position. I solved that issue with a very small alignment adjustment. And then reduced my servo thro on the rudder. At the extreme turn position, there was an indication of binding. The reduction of thro has seemed to eliminate this issue.

Ok my wife and her Hawk eye find it . There is a small screw if you look down into where the bands go on that once removed the rudder comes apart . Thanks Doc I will be smoothing it down some ......

Sorry, I forgot about the screw. This is really a fun plane, on water! Doc

I'm finding that even after sanding and making them nice n smooth they don't realign . I don't like the rubber bands or maybe I need stronger ones . The rudders move very well and free just not returning straight. Looked at the rod setup that Lon has and that seems well but I am nowhere near a hobby store to touch and feel the correct size of parts I need . Anyone else having the same issue ???

                  Bryan,

I had the same issue...not returning straight. I did change the line to spider wire, and put a longer servo arm which gave it more thro on the rudders for taxi turns. Even though they didn't return perfectly straight, didn't have any bad issues landing/takeoff.

But i did change to my current setup. And here's the parts i used. I had most these items already hanging on my parts pegboard, umm, just because i can't help myself buying spare parts, "just incase":)
I think the only thing not hanging on board was the dubro connector.

There is some flex/bowing on the pushrod setup, but heck, such great control and no messing with rubber bands.

I was going the "spring" setup, infact have the springs, but tried this way first and like it.

Hey Bryan, Yeah those rudders are a big pain. For me it helped to replace the rubber bands with springs. I got mine at the local hardware store. While they still aren't perfect yhey do seem to work better. When I get some time I'm gonna try Lons setup. Thanks for the parts list Lon.

Lon thanks so much for the info I ordered them and can't wait to get them in. I was wondering if the springs from a ink pen would work , just a thought ........

I don't know if ball point pen springs are strong enough. I got my springs at ACE hardware. Doc

I was discussing that with a friend of mine today and we came to the same conclusion . He mentioned the Roc Hobby Waco springs and I have those so I will be testing them when my other parts arrive . Thanks for everyone's input

Hey Bry, remember when the plane is in the water and taxiing, even if the rudders don't go back straight perfectly the force of the water usually tends to bring them back at least close enough to straight.

Amen to that FF! My replacement at work is a nice young lady named Kristen who is due any day now to have her first baby. As soon as she comes back (6 weeks maternity leave) I'll be FREE!!!!!!!! I just bought an EDF jet, the Freewing Rebel v2 and I spent last weekend fitting my Freewing Seagull with FPV so I've got some projects I really want to try. Need to get rid of all this rain first. We've had 17 straight days of measurable rain. Ugly weather... Glad to see everyone is doing well here! Missed you guys!
