I would imagine in those days it would not be droppable but installed to increase range for ferrying, distant bases, etc. In this scale, I don't think it would be a big problem fabricating in 3D. The C model P-47s carried a large round underbelly ferry tank for such a purpose until they came up with the centerline drop tank and eventually wing tanks/ordnance.

I'm still a bit hazy on the Navy F4B and the Army P-12. Were they essentially the same airframe but modified specifically for the needs of the different services?

The P-12 and F4B-3 were the same model. Different paint and tail hook on the navy version. Twin 30 cal or 1-30 and 1-50 cal machine guns. P-12 had a long gunsight in front of windshield, I'll add this this winter. Considering putting a coat of poly=acrylic on before test flight. A little harder protection for little weight gain.

thanks for that info, Rex. I like the idea of the poly acrylic to strengthen it a bit for little weight penalty.

Great job, Dan. I have never seen this video of Kermit Weeks but I'll try to dig it up and watch it. I'm sure it would be very helpful in detailing the P-12E for Rex and me.

Will be a great help. When we visit my sister-in-law this late fall I will stop at the Air Force Museum and take pics of the P-12 on display. I think you can get fairly close and if I ask curator sometimes they let you cross the ropes for close-ups.
Haven't heard any reports of anyone flying theirs yet. Has been several posts on the other site. Hoping to hear something before long or we might be the first, waiting on new prop for mine.

Just ordered the Boeing biplane. It looks really unique and should get a lot of interest at my flying field in AZ. I am using it as a practice plane before I fly my Blasa USA Fokker DR VII.

That’s so cool you live within reasonable distance from the AF museum in Dayton. Any pics you can take of their P-12 would be Very helpful for details.

I’m going to be in the Washington, DC area for a few days in November. I’m going to check just in case they have one too that I could photograph. Worth a shot if they have one.
