The Kawasaki Ki-61 Hien, known to the Allies by the codename "Tony" was the only Imperial Japanese Army Air Force (IJAAF) fighter of World War II built around a liquid-cooled, V12 engine. That powerplant, a license-built derivative of the German DB 601, gave the Hien a sleek, low-drag nose profile unlike any other Japanese fighter of the era, with a slender, European-style silhouette that set it apart from Japan's traditionally radial-engine fighter lineup. Entering service in 1943, the Hien paired that unusual powerplant with strong speed, firepower, and structural strength, and its high-altitude performance made it one of the more capable IJAAF fighters of the war.
The Nexa Kawasaki Ki-61 Hien 1540mm (60.6") wingspan ARF brings this distinctive fighter to the flying field finished in the striking markings of the 244th Sentai's Headquarters Chutai, based at Chofu, Tokyo in 1944–45. The scheme pairs a mottled green camouflage over the fuselage with a bold dark blue tail, a white lightning-streak, and twin command stars — one of the most recognizable and requested liveries the Hien ever wore. Built from balsa and lite-ply construction with a fiberglass cowling and included spinner, the airframe is covered and decorated at the factory to match, with pre-hinged control surfaces and a two-piece, center-joined wing that speeds up final assembly.
Scale detail carries all the way through the model. A hand-painted pilot bust sits in the cockpit, with dummy machine gun detail, a wooden antenna mast, and a scale pitot tube rounding out the presentation.
