  • Freewing B-17

I've been really enjoying my Freewing B-17 and I'd like to get some additional batteries for it.

I'm using Admiral 1800's right now but thought I might try some 2200's to get a little longer flight time but the pair of 2200's weighs 1.7 ounces more than the pair of 1800's.

Has anyone here flown the plane with 2200's? Did you have to add a bunch of weight to get it to balance?

Wow, an 1800 mah battery for a 4 engine plane. I can't imagine you'd get much more than a couple of minutes if you fly it vigorously. There's no room to move a bigger battery back some? Just from experience with other planes where I've used a bigger battery ................... The battery placement is usually closer to the CG than the place where you would have to add weight (ie, near the tail). This means that for every unit of weight increase in battery, you only need a fraction of that weight to counter-balance if that weight is attached as close to the tip of the tail as possible. You could even embed the weight in the foam, then paint over it and you'd never see it.

Two batteries, one for two engines. I get 4 minutes of flight time at 70 - 100% throttle, more 70 than 100. :)

When end I land the battery cells are 3.73 - 3.76 volts.

I see. So basically, you're flying with 3600 mah of batteries. I just watched those 2 Motion videos and it seems that the batteries are very close to the CG and Ryan does say he flies it with dual 2200's, so that tells me that the weight does not significantly change the way the plane balances. Ryan also did not mention anything about adding weight anywhere, so I believe that the plane is capable of flying with the bigger batteries and any weight difference doesn't matter or can be easily trimmed out without difficulty.
I'd love to get that B-17 but I simply have no room to store it.
