  • Need help with Phoenix Edge 540 65in (Motor/ESC)

Having a strange issue with my Phoenix Edge 540. I sure could use some assistance. The video shows everything.

In addition the motor gets really hot. Could it be that the motor is going out?

So, have you flown this model with that setup? Do you have the Castle Link and Castle Link software to examine the data log in the ESC? How about a Watt meter; have you measured the power when it is running normally?

Motor checks: disconnect it from the ESC and spin the prop; you should feel some magnet cogging, but it should turn freely in both directions. Dismount it, and have a look at the magnets, to be sure none are out of place. While it is unplugged, look closely at the solder connections; you can always replace the shrink tubing, after cutting it back to look for bad or cracked solder. If the motor seems to check out, and you have Castle Link, check the timing and other motor control settings in the ESC.

My first guess would be to check the timing settings on the ESC. Also, if you have another ESC you could throw in there, then that might help to narrow down where the issue is.

I have flown the model 3 or 4 times. The last time I flew it I noticed the motor was really hot. This morning I unsoldered everything and going to resolder tomorrow morning. I do have a watt meter and checked my setup and wattage. Also I got a new ESC today and am going to switch them and see if it still does the same to at least rule out Castle ESC. Also sent this email to Castle for their input.

I really recommend the Castle Link; I've used it to diagnose several problems, post-incident. For example, it can tell you if the current is going up, indicating more drag on the motor. Of course, easy programming comes with it.

Before I tried another ESC I thought I should try to unsolder and resolder my connections as they looked pretty sloppy. I resoldered everything and did some testing and that may have been it. I could not replicate the problem. I am going to keep trying however......
