  • FMS V8 1450mm Mustang Balance advice

Just getting this bird set up. The manual says 110mm or 4.3" from the leading edge of the wing. I find that on many planes, this is very subjective, and depending on where or how you measure, could lead to significant variation. I'm running an Admiral 4S 3600 battery. So far I have the battery hanging half way off the front of the removable battery tray and still tail heavy.

Is the 110 mm number good?
For others with this set-up, am I close?

    Thanks
    Shane

Mine is set up as per the manual. Can't remember what the actual number is. My battery is a Gravity 4000mah, 4s and although I'm using a bigger ESC and the motor out of the new P-40, the CG is as per the book. My battery sits in line with the front edge of the tray but yours may be different due to different equipment. I also use a 500mah, 2s Scorpion Back Up Guard in the middle of that big, empty compartment.
I've had this plane set up as a 6s and using the approx. CG, it flew the same, just really fast. This particular plane doesn't seem to be affected adversely by a slight change in CG. Trim it out and it just flies. I'll go so far as to say you could shift the balance point 10+mm either way and it'll still fly well, but nose over in grass is more of a problem if CG is too far forward. It's biggest handicap is the stock power. It's just not enough (for me) and it can wallow in turns. That might be what some people see as a touchy CG. Fly it at high throttle, especially in turns or upgrade the power system.
Here's a vid of it in its currently set up:

Hmm, that's interesting, I have both my D and B models set up so that I put my 3600's in the middle of the tray and they fly great.
Now, mind you , the D has a 580kv FMS motor with an 85A ESC and the B model has the stock 580kv and ESC from my Freewing P51. I don't think that would make much of a difference. I have swapped out the retract sides with the Smallparts CNC aluminum replacements, but as they sit pretty well on the CG, that shouldn't be an issue.
