    Re: FMS P38 Lightning

It surprises me that we don't see more twins out there. Especially in the 800-1100mm wingspan. Seems like they would be profitable, and popular.
I hate that motorcycle they make me ride. I'm here to tell you, there ain't nothing in the world I hate more than that elephant under my ass.

      RE: FMS P38 Lightning

I just heard from MRC chat line that FMS may not be making a new P-38 because " the molds are to expensive ".
That really sucks :(  . I just hope this is not true.

I think the current P38 was discontinued because of the many complaints.  I have been working on the one I have now for over a year.  I finally gave up for now and will wait and see what the revised one looks like.  I really wanted one of these planes that actually flies.

          Bump.

Any word on this? Or any P-38 Lightning? Man, I would love to see a 980mm 6-channel Lightning! Any hint that FMS may do one in the 980mm series? Can you imagine what a great warbird that would be?!?

            RE: FMS P38 Lightning

FMS has said nothing about a 1400mm P-38. I know more about what is going on (in general) than I should say but I'm comfortable saying there is no revised 1400mm P-38 so don't hold your breath. The P-38 was indeed discontinued because it was developed at a time when FMS was less experienced so it did not represent current quality of FMS models. We sent a list of at least 50 items which needed to be tweaked/updated. FMS decided there were too many issues to fix so they discontinued the P-38 in favor of making a completely new P-38. That never happened for various reasons which are speculation on my part.

              Thanks for the update, Tom.

Well, I guess my dreams of a 980mm P38 will remain dreams. It's disappointing that about every common (and now some not so common) WWII Allied fighter is available, but not the Lightning. I can imagine it's a difficult model to reproduce though. Double everything, and those delicate thin tail booms have to be an issue.

Oh well. Maybe they'll get back to it one day...

                RE: FMS P38 Lightning

My parent's searched for months to try and find a P-38 for me for Christmas... the one they found was, unfortunately, very lacking in build quality (search J-Power P-38) Sense it's maiden crash I've been working to rebuild it... replaced all the crappy electronics it came with... in an attempt to have a flyable P-38 model. it's not FMS quality at all.... and would LOVE to see FMS (and by extension MRC) have one available.

                Here's hoping that someday I'll see a pre-order notice :P

We are continuing to work to find a replacement. We did test the J-Power but we know the quality is lacking so we passed on their line of products.

I have the 1000mm J-Power P-38 as well. Flown twice, crashed twice, rebuilt three times. It's just a mess of a plane, and I don't think it's flyable. I'm not a novice either, I have over a dozen warbirds...

My dream P-38 would be a 980mm high speed version. Man, how cool that would be with flaps, retracts and lights?!?

I looked at the Legend P-38 which is a great size that I'd be looking for BUT in looking at the photos I did not like the quality of the laser cut construction. I, like others, are hoping a 1700 P-38 foam or built-up (better quality) will appear in Motion R/C's inventory.

Over on RC Groups there is a rumor starting (from another vender, NOT Motion RC) that there could be a 1600mm P-38 coming from someone (NOT FMS) in the August time frame. In deference to MRC I will not link to it, but the discussion is in the FMS 1400mm Trojan thread.

Tower Hobbies is showing a Flitework P 38 Lightning with a 57.7 inch wingspan.  It's in the new catalog as well

A nice scale P-38 and Spitfire are the last 2 birds on my bucket list, preferably 1400 + by FMS or Freewing. You'd think someone would satisfy demand for these someday.

I have wanted one of the FMS P-38's for a number of years now.

Seeing the FMS P-38's at a number of flying venues and hearing from their owners/flyers as to how stable the aircraft was.
I never ran into a seasoned flyer who did not speak well of this plane.

Anyway, as fate would have it, a FMS distributor/vendor who according to my contact at the local hobby shop had two FMS P-38's in his warehouse, they were both noted as being the silver version.

Seeing that this plane has now been discontinued and I may need parts soon and they may be hard pressed to find any.

So, I negotiated a good deal for both planes with the hobby shop owner for a good deal, after all one would be assembled and flown, the other was to be a parts donor.

Well, the birds arrived yesterday. Surprise, surprise.

One plane is silver and the other is green top and light blue bottom and it has the invasion stripes on both wings. The box it came in clearly shows that it was supposed to be a silver version.

They both look so good, I just can not pick one at this point in time as my flyer and to make the other a parts donor.

The green with the invasion stripes is so easy to keep track of the planes orientation, and the silver one looks so sleek, I am having a hard time trying to pick the flyer or the donor.

I have a silver one that I will give you.  I had two andneither one was worth the effort to build.  The one I have now is just a display piece.  You are welcomed to it!
