Re: fms 1400mm f4u corsair motor upgrade

This is one of my all time favorites to fly behind the 51, just cant beat the outline of a 51 or Corsair in the sky. I was looking at ways to increase power and was reviewing different power systems when I came across the FMS Olympus 3-D plane by MRC. The motor used is a FMS 4258 550KV Brushless Motor which handles both 5s and 6s bat packs. I ordered one and was surprised to find it is the same length and motor mount bolt pattern as the stock. I used the esc, motor mount, prop., and spinner spec'd for this motor and was able to bolt right on. Although the new spinner is not keeping with the original hub, it looks ok on this beast. I tested with both a 5s and 6s pack, 5s had noticeable power increase, and the 6s offered unlimited vertical. Using the FMS 70a ESC spec'd for this motor I flew for 3 minutes on both size packs with several WOT passes.Upon landing the Lipos, ESC, and motor were warm, not hot. I find that I fly this combination usually at 50% with WOT for passes, better than flying the stock unit wide open the majority of time.

          Re: Eurofighter V-1 vs V-2

This short eulogy is for my Eurofighter V-1. Just received and completed build on V-2 but sure the flight and handling characteristics are close to the same. This was my first TV bird and opened a whole new area in flying. Once you are proficient in TV, you will have so much fun just exploring the flight dynamics and maneuvers with the Eurofighter. One of my scariest moments was taking off with the TV accidentally left on. Upon rollout and rotation the plane went vertical in no time, then proceeded to roll inverted making a perfect loop 15' off the ground. It happened so fast my mind was going Oh S---!!! and was sure it would end in pieces. But to my amazement it rolled perfectly and ended upright a few inches off the ground, I cut throttle and made a greaser landing to my absolute amazement. For anyone witnessing this it looked like I just pulled off an incredible maneuver, not knowing it was purely unintentional. After changing my shorts I double check every time in preflight that the TV is OFF when taking off or landing.
The best and most fun part is doing 3' diameter loops coming out of them at high alpha. On my last flight with V-1 I could not stop doing these loops and after about the 5th or 6th lost all power and augured in. A post mortem revealed the bat cable loop w/ deans connector had melted and the wire separated. The loops and high alpha maneuvers for the extended time did not create enough airflow to cool off the electrics, and eventually melted the plastic deans connector which caused an open circuit. Two improvements with the V-2 are they eliminated the loop for those who wanted to run 2- 3cell batts, thus eliminating the potential failure and the linkage for the canards is much stronger and sturdy with very little play.

I have the 1400mm f4u as well and was looking to upgrade the motor without a lot of modding, did you have to cut the cowl to make it stick out since the stock motor is 4250 and this one is 4258? Let me know.

Re: fms 1400mm f4u corsair motor upgrade

              Greetings,
I have retrofitted all my 1400 birds to this new power package, and all fly much better and needless to say faster w/ almost unlimited vertical. I am currently traveling and do not recall which ones required the specific mod for this upgrade. One of the birds required absolutely no mods as the 6s motor fit in the same firewall and had the identical screw pattern. You will likely need to modify the existing firewall/motor mount with 1/4" ply glued to the backside of the existing plastic mount. Due to the size of the opening, you need to cut the new oval shaped ply into 2 pieces in order to place both behind the existing and cement in place. This way the new firewall will not pull out under the increased pull of the 6s motor. I use 1 1/4" course thread deck screws to anchor the motor plate to the firewall. You will need to ream out the new metal motor mount to accept the larger deck screws.
The system will cause an approx. 5mm larger gap between the spinner and front of cowl. In order to keep the same original gap one would have to remove the existing plastic firewall/mount, a major mod I found not necessary but this is a personal preference. Also I found the new 2 blade high speed propellor will work with a 70a esc, but I use an 80a for a cushion. Be aware by using the original 4 blade prop set up will cause an increase in load and will pull in excess of 80a, also will not yield the same speed as the 2 blade speed prop.
Obviously this mod will not yield an authentic or original look due to the increase in gap as well as the 2 blade prop., but I use it primarily for increase in performance. Unfortunately once you fly this mod. you will never go back, its a kick. I found the power package is well tuned as the lipo pack, esc, and motor all stay well within temperature limits even on wot flights. One more item I added was an extra cooling scoop either on top or below the front fuse which directs air to the lipo pack and/or ESC. I used the plastic wing servo covers I collected over the years which make a very good looking air scoop. Hope this helps.

Thanks CT for the info, since your post was in the Corsair forum I'm hoping that the that this is the one that you said matched up without any mods. Did you mean bolt pattern from the new motors X mount matched the firewall bolt pattern of the Corsair If so I am in business? Thanks in advance CT!!

Yeah, it actually doesnt look half bad on the Corsair. Whats surprising is one would think it needs aft weight to counter, but the CG is pretty much right on with a 3300 6s tucked in. Be aware you will have so much fun you will never go back!!!

Flies better than the v8 p51 but meh its just ok. It is grossly under powered and the angle of the battery makes any cg adjustments a major PIA. Lack of retractable tail wheel also make this model not all it could be. Oh and the Korean war variant is not my favorite at all. I know they were trying to shoot for the show plane version that is on the circuit. I know the original pilot died on a crash and his son took over?

How are you liking the battery that high up in the fuse? I love my corsair but it has it quirks from the factory. It flies amazing in fact better than the p51 but its just anemic and I hate the lack of retract tail wheel. On some models its not a big deal but on the f4u it looks odd. I think its the tear drop rear end.

It flies amazing in fact better than the p51 but its just anemic and I hate the lack of retract tail wheel. On some models its not a big deal but on the f4u it looks odd. I think its the tear drop rear end.
It doesn't affect it because it is only about 1/2 higher than the average height of the normal angle battery slot. Allows the CG to be more correctly set with adjustable battery position.
I agree on the anemic stock power system. I had transplanted a 580 into and that still wasn't getting it. It now has the 650 from the P-40B when I put the 460 from the 1500 Razor into the Warhawk.
That tail wheel is getting replaced with the retract for the FMS 1400 BF-109F.

                                Hello, Kristof from Belgium here.

Since I really absolutely love my FMS 1400mm P-51 V8 Petie 2nd with the ESS Air sound module in it (upgraded with the TT-25 transducers), I fitted my FMS 1400mm F4U V3 Corsair with the same configuration...
But, as good as the P-51 sounds, that bad does the Corsair sound. I tried several positions for the transducers:
                                - on both sides of the fuselage above the wing near the CG
                                - on both sides of the fuselage behind the cockpit (cut out a section on the bottom of the fuselage, where the venting holes are)
                                - on the canopy lid for battery access and on the bottom on the wing
None of these gave a good sound. I think it is due to the fact that the foam on this plane is very thick, thus eliminating the effect of the transducers.

As I was browsing the internet for a solution, I found a video from our friends at MotionRc with the old MrRCSound V4 with the "old school" speakers instead of the transducers. Now this sounds like it is supposed to.
                                https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=okcVdJybRQw

But the problem is, that these speakers are nowhere to be found anymore (Googled a lot!)...

Can anyone here help me out?
Because a warbird without a sound module in it, just doesn't do it for me... And I absolutely love flying my P-51 because of it.
The Corsair is even more beautiful in the air to me, but without the sound of the Double Wasp, it is just not complete...

Thanks in advance for any Info,
                                Kristof

Hello Kristof and welcome to the Squawk,
I got my V4 MrRCSound around the same time that Pilot Ryan did that vid and mine came with a the transducers.
I believe the"old school" speakers(approx 2-1/2" x 4" size) you are referring to were the ones that came with the Merlin sound upgrade option on the Freewing mustang which has been discontinued.
