  • UMX F4F Wildcat

I did a search and couldn't find any topics about it. Just wondering if anyone got their hands on one yet and what their impressions of it are. Mine will be here Tueaday.

I've always had a mantra of never buying stuff new, let the first wave get the kinks worked out, but I couldn't pass this plane up. My great-granddad used to work on them.

I am with you Ace, I very rarely buy the first run of anything. The UMX planes have been around for quite awhile though, and only the foam changes, so I wouldn't worry too much about this one!! I have been giving it the old hairy eyeball myself. I am not a UMX fan, but this one really has me thinking about getting it!!

Mine arrived at the hobby shop yesterday, I'll be picking it up on Friday. From what I've read online people like the flying characteristics. I haven't seen anything negative yet.

Did you not order directly from Motion?

No, not this time. I wanted to support my local hobby shop, the guy that owns it is a really good guy and a full scale pilot that built the RV he's flying, I like to get my Horizon stuff locally to support the local shop but of course there are a lot of things that only come from Motion so I spend a lot of money here as well, actually I spend more here. My friends joke that I should have part of my paycheck deposited here. :)

I may have different feelings than most about thist, my dad owned a Hobby Shop in the 70's / 80's and it always bothered him when people would come in and pick our brains about something then buy it from Tower Hobbies because it was cheaper. Some of those people would come back to us for help and support with whatever they bought even though it came from Tower. We always tried to use that as an opportunity to show the value of buying local and to support your local shops when you can.

To this day I have NEVER made a purchase from Tower.

I do the same thing from time to time I'll buy a plane or some sundries from our local, my family owned a Benjamin Moore paint store that the big box shops killed.

Just got it in. It looks so nice. Unfortunately, the weather wont be cooperating the next few days, so the maiden will have to wait :(

Also ordered the UMX P-47 along with it.

I thought some of you might enjoy this video, it contains some of the aircraft's history.

I buy all of my supplies, glue, hinges, weights, paint and such from my local shop, and I have bought a plane or two from them, but usually ones that are hanging on consignment. So, I do a fair amount of business with them. The retail mark up on planes makes it impossible to buy them locally though. Soon enough, brick and mortar will cease to exist, and all of our currency will be digital anyway, waiting on the EMP to wipe all of us out.

I've found with our shop that the plane prices are the same as HH sells them for, same with any processes that HH sells.

I think brick and mortar will be here longer than many think.

I was in the paint biz. I use to own a Pratt Lambert paint store. Home Depot killed me. Not so much on quality, but price and hours open. They are open till midnight 7 days a week. They did me a favor though. Paint business in California got really, really hard after I closed my doors. I think the paint business now is a fools folly. I always try and give the local hobby shop business, but even that is getting harder. Three went out of business in the last two years.
