ELECTRIC Fokker Dr1 ---- 45-50" Wingspan

  • ELECTRIC Fokker Dr1 ---- 45-50" Wingspan

    I really would like to fly/own an electric Fokker Dr1 triplane.
    Red Baron all red with white accents....no other colors or insignias just red and white with the stock crosses etc.

    I would like it to be between 45-50 inch wingspan and fly on 4S
    Foamie or ARF balsa doesn't matter which as long as it is of quality made with available parts!

    I have been searching for said plane to buy from an acredited source to ensure spare parts availability when alas NOBODY makes one period.
    The ones that are manufactured now are all huge gassers/kits or small micros....NONE of the medium electric size are available.
    I think when someone does make this plane they will have the market cornered as I have looked local and online for 3 years now for said plane...nope nothing!

    I can dream I guess as I have written all the major rc plane manufacturers and most didn't even reply :(

    I'd like to see a number of WW I bipes in that 50 inch range, particularly a Sopwith Camel. I'm sure there are some engineering challenges in making models of those planes. The few I have owned have been drastically tail heavy and required a lot of useless weight to get them to balance.

      Good forward weight is a bigger motor :) I have a Pitts and had to add a bunch of weight to the cowl to balance but it flies great.

        The Fokker DR-1 has problems transferring to a model. With a tail skid, they ground loop horribly. In order to make them scale, with the short nose, a lot of weight has to be added to the nose. They had such a short nose because the rotary engines were incredibly heavy. I have one...almost impossible to get it off the ground. Doc

          Yes, the old Fokkers have thier quirks, but that is also part of thier appeal. I'm currently recovering my 1/3 scale D.VIII. Here is a pick of a buddy's 1/2 scale DR-1. Impressive on the ground and in the air.

            Thanks for the replies, those are nice planes there and I bet landing with a tail skid would be difficult...I think I'd put a little wheel under there instead...I sure hope they make a medium size electric some day!

              A mid size elect would be good. I'm actually thinking about hiding a small tail wheel in the bottom of the tailskid on the D.VIII while I've got her in the refurb hanger. She's electric as well. An 80-100cc elec motor spinning a 26" prop on 12S(4 each 6S 5000mah packs). She weighs in at a nimble 32lbs.

                I replaced the skid with a steerable tail wheel. Not scale, but works much better. Doc
