New Plane - FMS P-40B

Another new plane announced this week. FMS 980mm P-40B

This is a fantastic plane. We've have well over 100 flights on our test model and absolutely love it. We worked tirelessly with FMS to get the livery (colors and decals) as perfect as possible. There were a few changes it was too late to make on the livery but I think overall you will find the new livery very authentic which, in our opinion, really adds a lot to the model. This is the same motor and ESC found in the Strega, high speed Critical Mass, Corsair F2G, and Voodoo (FMS 980mm P-47 as well). However, all those planes have scale 4 blade props. This plane has a scale 3 blade prop which is quite a bit more efficient when compared to the 4 blade props on the other planes. This translates to FAST! However, if you don't want all out speed, it flies amazingly well on a 3S LiPo (or 4S at less than 1/2 throttle).

We will have a full video review and pictures of the final production version in about a week (working on it now).

That is a nice looking wardbird but a bit too expensive for a plane that is less than 39 "wingspan. I am sure others like a smaller plane but I wish FMS would have upgraded the older 1400mm P-40 instead. I hope this new smaller P-40 plane sells well.

Hey Alpha have you had it on grass yet ? Many of us don't have access to paved runways and most clubs that's a huge investment .

If you guys do a P-51 like this, I might look at getting one.. The weight specs on the P-40 , have it at 1200g all up flying weight on a 4s,, that seems kinda porky for a 980mm warbird.. It's amazing that the flight reviews have it pretty stable at low speeds with that weight !!.. ''Good job MRC''!!!

Things that make it heavy:

1) Motor is sized for a plane much larger. This makes it fast.
2) 70A ESC. A plane this size would normally have a 20A ESC which is significantly lighter
3) Digital metal gear servos. more weight than plastic but much stronger
4) Retracts. Planes this size don't normally have retracts.
5) 4S LiPo - planes this size would use a 2S or 3S LiPo. 4S = power, vertical, speed
6) Scale details such as spring loaded landing gear doors are not normally found on a model this size.
7) Flaps - most, if not all, planes this size do not include flaps. This adds 2 more servos.

You get the idea. All this stuff adds weight but it also contributes significant value to the model. As with everything in RC, there is always compromise and the best path for a model (or group of models in this case) must be chosen. We're currently testing the next 2 models in the series after the P-40B. One is a P-39. Someone else on RCG already spilled the beans about the P-39. I've had it on my wish list to FMS for over a year and I'm super happy they are now making it.
