  • Servo help! for 800 size heli

Need some help. I'm retiring very soon on a tight budget. I have a 800 size MD500 that will be my first project, but I still need some build parts including cyclic servos. Looking for "value" options that will still be able to get the job done. I'm not up on current on servos, and I was shocked at the prices.. $200 for a single servo!!!. Jeez! Is there anything better than the cheap plastic MKS servos the Motion recommends for this heli? for just a little more? Something around $100 each? How about these high spec off brand china servos I see on Amazon? Are they a no go? Budget is unfortunately important at this time.

The MKS HBL665 (cyclic) and HBL669 are a great budget combo. I used them in my 800 Cobra.

I'd also recommend the Theta THL398 as a fantastic budget ($80) cyclic servo, then use the Theta Razor T1 for the tail.

Thanks could you tell me why the HBL665 would be a better choice than these Motion recommended MKS DS1220 servos

They’re pretty closely equivalent. If anything, I’d go for the Thetas personally. They are newer servos, cheaper, and with more torque.

I recommend the HBL665s because I’ve used them, and they worked well for me. I’ve used the mini size thetas extensively, but not any of their standard size servos yet.

I use the KST 2208HV for the cyclic and a KST 1035HV for the tail, I have used these servo combo in all my 800 size builds and they performed great with plenty of power.
I think you can get the combo pack for like $549.
What ever you do don't skimp using cheap servos, not saying you were, I was just suggesting these servos because I have used them and know how they hold up.

I still haven't decided, but will probably be one of the cheaper MKS servos or Theta posted above'

Well whatever you choose make sure the torque is there, you don't need speed but you need that torque because that's a 5 blade head your running with big tail blades, I cut my tail blades down to 135mm from the stock 152mm it comes with, they kind of look stupid at 152mm and the tail holds just fine at 135mm and look more scale, just my 2 cents on that....

One last call as I'm ordering this weekend, I'm going with a TORQ tail servo as I really like that one for the price. In my cart they offered a 3 pack combo of their HV standard servo. Is the torque rating to low for cyclic? Here it is = https://www.helidirect.com/products/...29289756360781

I forgot about those servos. I tried that TORQ combo in my Roban 800 size OH-6 and was very happy with them, ended up being cheaper than the KST combo deal, plenty of torque because I was running them on 8.4v. I would buy that combo deal again over the KST combo if I was to build another 700 or 800 heli.
