  • Whose is the new kid ?????

I don't mean anything by this and I hope this is not taking the wrong way , Who is Sam ?? Is old enough to drive ? I guess I am wondering about his experience as far as showing and giving tips on planes. I feel like I am watching my grandson or a 9th grader

I haven't seen any of his posts.

In the 70's when I started flying my dad owned a hobby shop, we sold planes. We offered to teach people to fly. I was 13, only taught a few people to fly, I always felt adults didn't think I could teach them to fly. They were wrong.

We've got a member in our club with an 8 year old, the kid flies big 3D planes as good as most people. He's amazing. I don't judge people by their age.

I haven't seen any post but there is a You Tube video up on MRC area.. I'm not saying he can't fly nor that he is a bad pilot but I prefer someone with some time and knowledge under their belt on giving me info ...

Sam is 17 years old and a good friend. He's been flying RC planes for at least 5 years and also has a Private Pilot license. He's an intelligent young man, passionate about aviation and always willing to help others. Sam is a perfect addition to the Motion RC family and I'm proud to see him inspiring the next generation of model aviation enthusiasts.

On a personal note, I've been involved in model aviation for 40 years and I enjoy learning a thing or two from young pilots and students. I'm currently teamed with students from the California State University Northridge for their Aero Design Competition. I'm having fun teaching and learning from these guys. Heck....my 16 year old daughter is always teaching me something. :D

        Great job Sam! :)

            Hi there, Sam here.

Thank you xplaneguy for the kind words, much appreciated! I started flying RC at the age of 6, which would put me at over 11 years of experience in scale model flying. Since 2013, I've been flying full-scale, which has continued to fuel my love of aviation. I'm very glad to now be a part of the Motion RC team, and hope I can both give helpful advice and receive the same, as there's always more to learn with a great hobby like this. Due to being out of town for the past week or so, I haven't been as active on the forums as I will be in the future, so definitely expect to see more frequent posts coming from me. I hope I create some quality content that you enjoy, and I'm sure I'll see you around on the forums. :)

I personally hand selected Sam from a group of candidates after a very exhaustive search. I'd like to think I have a consistent record of making good judgement calls throughout my time here with Motion RC from the "early days" to where we are now, and I have every confidence Sam will continue our momentum upward with his contribution's to our media team's production.

Sam epitomizes the attributes we value most here at Motion RC --Integrity, Responsibility, Honesty, a Positive Attitude, a desire to Teach and Learn at every opportunity, a Passion for Aviation, and the Knowledge to back it up. He is energetic, unjaded, and logistically speaking, he owns lots of great gear with a trusted cameraman and he flies every day minutes from me where I can personally oversee his work as we scale up his contributions. And personally, for the record I think his youth is an asset. There aren't many of his generation who fly REAL PLANES several times a week, on top of his RC flying. How many of us can say that? I can learn lots from him; he has more than twice as many Cessna hours as I do. And he can learn lots from me, I have more than twice as many decades of flying as he does. The advantages go both ways, so long as choose to see our different paths as advantages.

Sam flies at Apollo with me, Xplaneguy, T-Cat, Roys01, and other Hobbysquawk members. He'll be tackling a range of subjects in his videos, from trainer planes, to upgrade power systems, to general How To videos. The fact is, we're all at different levels in the hobby. What someone may not deem as "valuable", well, that doesn't mean it isn't valuable to someone else. I don't expect a Mirage-level pilot to watch his trainer plane videos showing new pilots how to plug in a receiver. But I know new pilots will watch those videos, and LEARN something. That's the point.

And if anything, he'll be flying with me, and I know my stuff, if I don't say so myself :). I benefited greatly from mentors, and Mark and Tom have in many ways been the same for me in the RC World. Bringing someone like Sam under our wing allows us to pay it forward to a new generation. Lord knows if it was just left to us old fogies we'd all be in trouble. HA!

I'd just like to personally say hi to Sam and welcome from me as well. I know, 100% that Bryan meant no disrespect, but was genuinely curious, I guess I would be as well. But the future of this hobby isn't in the hands of old farts like me, but in the hands of your generation and its great to see you so involved at your age. One thing about people of the teenage variety, when they take on something, they take it on with a passion. I remember practicing guitar 8 hours a day and thinking nothing of it. Thank God for an understanding mother!!!!

I had the distinct priviledge of meeting Sam (and Alpha, Addison and the rest of the MotionRC gang for that matter) at the Apollo event this past weekend. Sam definitely has a passion for both this hobby and aviation in general. I'm glad I got to meet him and his "Flock of Seagulls" hair! :D

Yeah, Gman...When I was 16, If I wasn't building models, I was sitting on my bed practicing guitar 'till my fingers bled. Where are the kids with that interest today? Sam shows me that there is some hope! Doc

Right on Doc, Mom used to hate to send me to my room, 'cause to my mind, that wasn't a punishment!
You and I would have got along great, I had more airplane models than I care to count as well, and loved every one of them.

By the way Bryan, your punishment is that you have to come to NEFI in Muncie and fly with the bunch of us!!

                          Hey Gman and Doc!

See m s like we all have the same thing in common. As a young boy it was airplane and car models, and playing guitar.

I also had the pleasure of meeting Sam at the Apollo Field this past weekend. He is a bright young man and definitely has the passion of aviation flowing through his veins! He is definitely an asset to not only MotionRc, but to all of us as well.

I had the pleasure of meeting Sam at the Apollo Field Pizza Fly in last Saturday. I can say he is a very polite and knowledgeable young man and it was a pleasure to meet him. Welcome to the team Sam.

Great to hear guys, and yes, lets see the Summer of 69, I'd have been around 15-16, still acoustics, electrics came around 72 when I had a job.
My room was solid model airplanes, Revel had just brought out the 1/32 line. The Spitfire, The ME 109F and the P40E Flying Tiger (Duke Hedman markings).
I remember thinking they were so big!
                                Anyway, enough reminiscing......
I'm hoping that Sam makes it to NEFI so I get a chance to meet him as well!!
