    Old Bold (R/C) Pilots

    Hey all,

    I ran across some photos I had taken at the 1984 US Scale Masters in KC MO.

    Seeing these two guys was like seeing your favorite chilhood heroes, whomever that might have been.

    Anything I thought about how to detail R/C Model aircraft after that trip changed and I thought I had found a society of kindred spirits.

    Thought those of you who remember these two would get a kick out of a couple candid shots from that weekend.

    Left to right and top to bottom:
    Dave Platt, Frank Tiano, Meeting of the minds.
    Platt's Zero Before/After the tree sortie, Dennis and Linda Crooks' TBM Avenger

    Had a great time that weekend, met some gracious people who inspired all the lives they touched.

      Y'all,

      And if you're still reading this thread, the photos below are from the same time period 1984-5.

      That's me in the light blue shirt and would ya look at those shorts. Whoa.

      Pictures:

      1) The TopFLite Headmaster Sport .40 (Ken Willard design) was my first build.

      Elmer's Carpenters Glue pinned to particle board and one hour epoxy.

      Khaki Monokote with Maroon and Navy Monokote Trim.

      Took forever to finish and I loved every minute of it.

      After a year of flying it, I added a tuned pipe to the OS Max .40 abc, now that was crazy, but it was a rocket.

      Converted to wing bolts over the rubber bands soon after this picture was taken...duh.

      2) I'm helping a guy with his first build a Goldberg Falcon 56 at Beech Field ICT.

      3,4) My first scale build, Coverite GeeBee Model D.

      Ahh, those were the days or at least I thought so.

          Brings back a lot of memories. Dave Platt was one of my Heros and I have built his FW-190 and 2 Zeros plus finishing his 82" T-28. Dave and I talked at the nationals and Toledo for years. Dennis Crooks lives about 25 miles from me and we have known each other since those days. Thanks for the memories.

              It is truly a small world, Rex.

              Some things you just don't forget and that weekend has stuck with me since.

              I watched most of those guys go on to to Tiano's TopGun Competition and always thought I'd get to experience that all again.

              I began a different life a few years later and until 2017 I had done nothing in the way of modeling.

              It was big fun coming across all those pictures this week.

              I too, wanted to buy/build Platt's Zero after that weekend, however, I bought Bryan Taylor's Typhoon short kit I had little money in those days. LOL

              Had just gotten married and was buying a first home (tiny condo).

              I won't bore y'all any more, but these were also standout models for me then.

                  Those are great pictures and memories. Kent Walters was another Hero and his Dauntless made me order the plans, cowl and canopy back then. Still have them today and think a electric version would be great today. Like you I was just starting my career, and money was tight, so I lived my dream thru those guys. Think that's Jim Miesters Dauntlas behind Kents.
