  • HobbyEagle S3 Super II - Futaba T14SG Gain Issues

I sent the following a E-Mail to HobbyEagle on 02/08/2015.

I am having problems getting the A3 Super II GAIN assigned to the RD Volume Knob on my Futaba T14SG transmitter. The A3 Super II was purchased from MotionRC in the United States.

    Futaba Transmitter: T14SG
    Firmware: 5.0

    Futaba Receiver: R7008SB
    Receiver Mode: Mode B
    Configuration:

    CH1 AIL
    CH2 ELEV1
    CH3 Throttle  - Futaba S3004 Servo
    CH4 Rudder
    CH5 Mode Selection on A3
    CH6 AIL2
    CH7 Flap1  - I have a Futaba S.BUS Servo ordered.
    CH8 Flap2 – I have a Futaba S.BUS Servo ordered.   – This is currently connected to the A3  - S.BUS/MOD port
    CH9 AUX1 - A3 Gain
    CH10 AUX2
    CH11 AUX3
    CH12 AUX4

I have the Volume RD knob set to CH9 in the transmitter configuration and if I move this knob it does not show up in the A3 Configuration software. In fact if I move the Aileron joystick axis the gain number jumps erratically. I tried changing the A3 Gain channel to 11 but then it jumps around when the Throttle joystick axis is moved.

The Volume SD knob has been configured to operate Flap1 and Flap 2 on channel 7 and 8 via a S.BUS connection.

A3 Super II (Version 1.0 Firmware)
    Connection to Futaba R7008SB – S.BUS

Currently I only have a single Hitec HS-5485HB Standard Digital Servo attached to the A3 – OUT1 connection. I have attached the A3 configuration file that I currently have loaded.

RE: HobbyEagle S3 Super II - Futaba T14SG Gain Issues

It appears that the HobbyEagle S3 Super II is not responding to any channel other than the ones that physically exist on the Futaba RX. I currently have the Futaba connected to the S3 Super II via the S.BUS connector. Any attempt to assign channel 9 thru 12 to the Gain does not appear to work.

I just switched the connection to a S.BUS2 on the Futaba RX and S3 Super II and it is experiencing the same issues.

I called Motion RC this morning an they indicated the China was having a national holiday and this would explain the delayed response to the E-Mails to Hobby Eagle.

My next step will be to reconfigure the Futaba Radio so that it will not use the flap servos.

The Futaba RX configuration should then become. (2 Aileron - NO Flaps)

      CH1 - Aileron 1
      CH2 - Elevator
      CH3 - Throttle
      CH4 - Rudder
      CH5 - Gear --- A3 Super II Mode Selection
      CH6 - Aileron 2
CH7 - VPP --- I should be able to assign this to the Futaba TX LD or RD knobs
      CH8 - SBUS Connection

If this works then the next step will be to try and assign the Flap 1 and Flap 2 servo to the S.BUS connection which would allow me to use CH7 on the RX for the A3 Super II gain.

Use the computer software, at the top select radio tab then click receiver type and use the S.Bus configuration 1 or 2. You can assign channel settings on the bottom of the page under S.Bus CHs. Let us know if that helps.

RE: HobbyEagle S3 Super II - Futaba T14SG Gain Issues

Thank you for the reply !

This is how I am configuring A3 Super II. I have tried S.BUS and S.BUS2 for the radio connections tried channels 8,9,10,11 and 12 and the results are the same. If I set the channel to 7 which I am using for flaps the GAIN will follow the Futaba LD knob.

I have verified from the Futaba TX that all channel 1-12 are working properly by watching the servo monitor screen on the TX.

I have reset the A3 Super II numerous times and have reset the Futaba transmitter.

I have two S.BUS servos coming in that I am going to use for FLAP 1 and FLAP 2 and will set them to use CH9 and CH10. The Futaba LD knob will control them. I should be able to then use CH7 as the A3 Super II GAIN.

RE: HobbyEagle S3 Super II - Futaba T14SG Gain Issues

I finally have a configuration that works with the Futaba R7008SB RX, T14SG RX and the Hobby Eagle A3 Super II (Version 1.00) firmware.

Futaba Model Type: Modified 2 Aileron + 2 Flap

The A3 Gain and Flight Mode MUST be assigned to one of the PWM channels assigned to the RX. This information is passed to the Futaba R7008SB RX via the S.BUS connection. Any attempt to assign the A3 Gain and Flight Mode to a channel higher than 7 resulted in the GAIN and Flight Mode not being correctly identified by the A3 Super II.

I assigned FLAP1 and FLAP2 to the S.BUS servos using CH8 and CH9. The A3 Gain was assigned to CH7. The Futaba R7008SB is configured as Mode B which provides Channel 1-7 , S.BUS and S.BUS2 connections.

I am still testing it on the bench and the A3 Super II software is showing a smooth response to the Futaba TX commands with no interaction to the Gain and Flight Modes, When I attempted to use CH 8-12 the Gain would jump around whenever the throttle and rudder we moved.

I still have a E-Mail into Hobby Eagle as I feel that the A3 Super II should allow the use of all channels as indicated in the configuration software and handheld programmer.

I have attached a PDF file that documents the configuration that I am using.

RE: HobbyEagle S3 Super II - Futaba T14SG Gain Issues

This is the response that I received from Hobby Eagle today.

I replied to them that their website and documentation is deceptive as it indicates that is support the Futaba S.BUS and S.BUS2 protocols. In addition the configuration software and programming both both allow the section of channels higher than 8. I have requested that they supply me a timeframe for the next firmware update will be available. I will make my decision on whether or not to return the product at that time. JR PPROPO has a gyro that works with S.BUS and X.BUS and indicates that it supports channel up to 12.

                ================================================== ======
                Hi,

                Thanks for your email.
In the current version V1.0 of A3 Super II, the controller will only parse the first 8 channel inputs of the sbus line.
So now you need to make sure all of the channels are assigned before ch8.

In the next version, we will consider to expand it to 14 channels.

                Regards,

                Eagle

RE: HobbyEagle S3 Super II - Futaba T14SG Gain Issues

Hobby Eagle has responded that they will be working on a firmware upgrade that should allow the selection of all available channels on the Futaba radio. I will keep the post updated when I get the new firmware from them.

RE: HobbyEagle S3 Super II - Futaba T14SG Gain Issues

I have the same radio, which is why I use Eagle Tree gyros.  The programming is much easier using the S. Bus setup.  Moreover, when I had an issue with the gyro, the response from them was what I expected.  If a company gives poor customer, I take my business elsewhere, e.g., BH, which is the worse I have ever seen.  They are so bad that our RC club has a "BH" complaint page on Facebook.  If I cannot get it from MRC, I probably do not need it .

RE: HobbyEagle S3 Super II - Futaba T14SG Gain Issues

So far HobbyEagle has responded to all of my request in a timely manner. The only time there was a considerable lag was during the Chinese New Year, but I was sent a response indicating that they would look into my issue. They then sent me some new firmware to test with my S.BUS setup so that I could choose additional channels.

I have the firmware loaded but have not had the time to test the S.BUS channels selection.

I am in the process of getting the gyro installed in my airplane and will do some final flight testing.

What kind of issues are you having?

RE: HobbyEagle S3 Super II - Futaba T14SG Gain Issues

I just got around to testing the firmware that HobbyEagle sent me to correct the inability to use any channel greater than 8 on S.BUS.

I have the A3 Super II connected to my Futaba R7008SR Receiver via S.BUS. The A3 Super II is configured as follows:

                        AIL1 - CH1 via S.BUS - Hitec HS-5485HB Digital Servo connected to A3
                        ELE - CH2 via S.BUS - Hitec HS-5485HB Digital Servo connected to A3
                        RUD - CH3 via S.BUS - Hitec HS-5485HB Digital Servo connected to A3
                        AIL2 - CH6 via S.BUS - Hitec HS-5485HB Digital Servo connected to A3
                        ELEV2 - Not configured
                        GAIN - CH7 via S.BUS --- ORIGINAL CONFIGURATION
                        MOD - CH5 via S.BUS

                        FLAP1 - CH8 via S.BUS - Futaba S3073HV S.BUS Servo
                        FLAP2 - CH9 via S.BUS - Futaba S3073HV S.BUS Servo

                        Throttle - CH4 - - Hitec HS-5485HB Digital Servo connected to Futaba R7008SB RX

I changed the GAIN from CH7 to CH10, 11 and 12 on my Futaba T142G TX and on the A3 Super II configuration. The A3 Super II was able to utilize S.BUS channels greater than 8.

I am not sure when HobbyEagle will officially release new firmware .
