I'm confused as well. Your Flight modes are setup in your radio. Just..
Turn on your radio.. go to 'system setup'.. scroll down and click on 'f-mode setup'..highlight 'Flight Mode Switch"..
flip which ever switch you desire and it will show in the highlighted box.. click on your scroll to accept. Your switch is now assigned.

I think I know what you're trying to do. You want the 3 modes to be: 1. "normal" mode; 2. 3D mode; 3. gyro OFF. What kind of plane are you putting this A3L into? Is it a 3D plane? If it is NOT, you shouldn't even try to set a "3D" mode. That mode is somewhat "glitchy" and on all the planes that I've tried to install this gyro on and try to use "3D" (none of my planes are 3D planes), when you switch to 3D mode, the plane goes crazy. It's best to turn the 3D gain pot (gain 2) to zero and forget about it. Now you should concentrate on putting the "mode" connection to a 2-way switch so you have gyro ON and OFF. Connect up the "S.Bus/GAIN" pins to a channel that can be controlled by your rotary knob. This now becomes your "master gain" and you can adjust the "normal" gain in flight. Set your normal gain pot (gain 1) to about 12 o'clock, which is about 50% gain. Your master gain will now control that 50% from full OFF (zero) to 50% (at full clockwise turn). Begin your first test flight with the knob set at just before 12 o'clock (which would be approx. 25% gain). As you fly to your plane's top speed, increase gain on the rotary till you see an oscillation in the plane, then back the gain off till the oscillation is gone. If you're not dexterous (quick) with the knob, then use the ON/OFF switch. Turn it ON to test at high speed, turn it OFF and adjust the knob and turn it back ON, etc.
IF in fact, you are installing this in a 3D plane, then I suggest you assign that top left 3-position switch to control AUX1, but remember that AUX1 is defaulted to the flap switch, so you must re-assign that port and NOT use the flap switch (unless you really want to, assuming you have no flaps on the plane, in which case, you must NOT activate the flap menu ........................ ie. DO NOT tell the TX you have a plane with flaps).
