  • AR637T setting up AS3X in an Avanti

I’ve moved my AR637T into my Avanti. I only want to use AS3X, no SAFE.
Set up the Avanti first all controls working in the correct sense and throttle cut set.
Set the gyro orientation and selected Aux3 and RKnob switch. All seemed to boot up but when I waggle the a/c around to check the AS3X is working in the correct sense, control surfaces don’t seem to be working at all, throttle is also greater than 25%.
Just can’t see what I’ve done wrong !

The control surfaces will only react to sharp uncommanded input. Depending on the gains it can be very hard to see.

For diagnostics only you can either set up a flight mode for safe mode or instead of safe the same gains but with 100% heading hold. You absolutely don't want to fly with that degree of heading hold. It is only for diagnosis and then you remove it.

Once you use either the safe mode or heading hold trick you should.be able to see the control surfaces move and verify that the surfaces are moving in the correct orientation.

Again, once you've verified that.the surfaces are moving correctly, remove any heading hold settings you added.

Ok thanks very much for your reply. Watching the video of setting up AS3X on YouTube, the control surfaces seem to move quite a bit when the aircraft was moved around before SAFE was set up. I’ll give your method a try thanks

Did you notice in those videos that they suggest you use the "X4" amplification for testing? Then you put it back to X1 for flying. Also, 25% throttle might not be enough to engage AS3X after battery attachment. I blip the throttle to almost 1/2 to be sure.

I have the NX8 and I have a preset Avanti model set up. I notice that when I click menu under Throttle Curve I have AS3X Gains. If I click on it I notice it has Input L Trim. Now I’m confused, do I change the gains with the R Rotary knob or the L Trim or do they both do the same thing ?

Somewhere along the way, you've somehow assigned gains to the L.Trim. Go in and change it to whichever you want. I find the trim knob to be too sensitive. I'd go with the knob.
Alternatively, if you don't want SAFE, you might be better off the make the gains/priorities fixed rather than adjustable just to get something working. Assign gains to a 3-position switch (I use the so called "flight mode" switch) and dial in 3 different gains/priorities so you can start with low gain and work your way up. Once you figure out which gain works best for that plane, then you can go with adjustable and assign it to the rotary knob, whereby you can adjust from zero to the max gain you've got it set for.

Thanks very much for your help.
That AS3X Gains option in the menu with the L/R Trim is only there when I set the Avanti up as an imported FMS Avanti PnP. Mine is a Freewing Avanti but there is no available import for this so I thought the FMS Avanti was the next best thing. Perhaps this was a mistake and I should have just set it up as a new model because when I do this there is no ‘AS3X Gains’ with L/R trim switch option in the menu (not forward planning menu).

I’m not familiar with FMS imported files.

Simon Bee I have used the Spektrum FMS model files and now prefer to set the model up from scratch. The model files have been hit or miss for me. With forward programming etc it has been so easy. And I get less frustrated fixing my own programming than use someone else's mistakes.

yes, thanks. I’ve deleted the FMS Avanti model and I’ll set up as a new model. That AS3X Gains option in the TX menu with L/R Trim input was totally confusing

OK after resetting Forward Planning to factory settings 4 or 5 times because I thought AS3X wasn’t working, I’ve now realised what I was doing wrong. Mistakenly I was advancing the throttle beyond 25% with throttle cut ON, since found that you need to advance beyond 25% with throttle cut OFF.
