  • Mobius Camera (What version and Lens) or Another

I messed up my mobius camera and need to get another one. I primarily use it velcro'd to my ball cap for you tube videos. I am wondering if anyone has any experience with different lenses and what version?

Since I can't zoom in when filming is there one better than the other as far as lenses? Since I need to get another one I might as well get the best one I can.

Or a different camera I can attach to a ballcap?

    Thanks

I find the wide angle lens to make for poor videoing of what I'm looking at. The plane becomes very tiny and mostly invisible even when it's not very far away. The regular lens is much better for keeping the model see-able in the video. Even better would be a slight zoom but I've not seen such a lens for the Mobius. I sometimes use a Sony Webbie (lens can rotate to different angles or levels), with zoom, but I almost always put the zoom too high or the angle is wrong and the plane flies out of frame easily. I must learn to use only a slight bit of zoom and be more consistent with lens angle.

Thanks, Pretty sure I currently have the wide angle as the planes gets very tiny even when close. I am looking at getting another one with lens A.

I agree. I much prefer the standard lense versus for using it to film my flying via the hat mount. Also, when you do get the Möbius, be sure to play with resolution setting to your liking because it will also make a difference in the zoomed in/zoomed out effect. For example, 1080p at 30 fps is a bit more zoomed in and realistic for my liking compared to the zoomed out effect of 1080 at 60 fps. You may capture more of the surroundings at 60 fps, but since your goal is to see the plane better when watching the footage afterwards, you don't want it looking further away. In addition, if you still need the plan to be in closer view, filming in 720p will really enhance the zoomed in effect in comparison to 1080p, but you'll obviously lose some resolution.

I recently purchased a Mobius 2 cam and am disappointed with the wide angle lens mounted on my baseball cap. The plane looks like its 500 yards away. They offer a 8X zoom for $25 but installation is not user friendly. Has anyone tried the zoom out and can give any tips for swapping out the lens ?

This is my same complaint. Used as a "hat cam", everything looks like a tiny dot in the frame. My current Q6 Firefly has a narrower field of view than the usual key chain type cameras but the picture in only marginally bigger. Most little cameras has a 120 degree field. The Q6 is around 100 degrees. I would love something that could zoom and is the size of a key chain cam.
Insofar as swapping out the lens, I've seen YouTube videos on how to do this. It doesn't seem too difficult. I just never went that route but I might re-visit that again.

I just went to the Mobius site and I couldn't see anywhere that there was the option of an 8X zoom lens. Do you have a link?

Here is the link for the 8X zoom. https://www.mobius-actioncam.com/sto...lacement-lens/
I installed the lens on my Mobius2 camera and plan on trying it out today. The installation wasn't too hard. I had to use quite a bit of force to loosen the zoom lens. I think they used some type of adhesive like blue Loctite when they installed it. Focusing was a pain because my camera does not have WiFi It was a slow trial by error process and I still do not have a perfect focus but good enough for a trial. I have a feeling that the field of view will be too small to use this attached to my baseball cap but will post a reply after I try it out.

Thanks. Now that I see it, I do remember something about this about a year ago. I didn't go that route because I wanted to try the Q6. Let us know how well the zoom works. How and where do you plan to mount the camera?

I'm afraid the 8X zoom experiment did not work. At this magnification the field of view is reduced significantly. I mounted the camera on my baseball cap using a money clip and industrial strength velcro and failed to capture the flight even after adjusting the camera's angle using a foam pad. In fairness to Mobius they only recommended this lens for Airsoft and not to record RC planes. A 2X or 3X zoom may be the answer but I haven't found a manufacturer with this option. RunCam doesn't offer one either. I'm a little surprised that there is nothing out there, but they must feel that the market for cap mounted cameras to record RC flights is too small to justify producing the lens. Unfortunately, if you want to record your flight it looks like you'll need a buddy with a camcorder or settle for very tiny plane with little detail when using a Mobius as a "hat cam"

That's too bad. It's how I mount my cameras. I'm OK with standard non-zoom 100 degree field but I wouldn't mind if there was a slight zoom. I also mount my Sony Webcam the same way. It's an old one with the swivel lens and it has zoom. It's a bit big and heavy for a hat cam but if I cinch up the ball cap band, it's not too bad. I can only zoom a small amount. Too much and I have the same problem you did with the 8X.
I have much better videos with my Iphone on zoom but the daylight washes out the display so you can't see what's on the screen. I made a viewing box for it but that requires a second person to do the videoing.
