  • Question on setting up Spektrum AR637TA receiver for my FMS 1500mm P-47D?

Hi All: I recently set up a new 1500mm FMS P-47D along with a couple others that I have had for years. Somehow I was short a receiver and found this Spektrum AR637TA in my pile of stuff that I thought I'd try at least for now. It came from another airplane somewhere, don't even remember which one.

Anyway, I have it installed in the plane now, I think in the correct attitude flat on the foam deck inside with the two antennas facing forward taped in place coming out of the receiver.

Here's the thing: every time that I start it up for testing in my shop, the airplane comes alive, and all the control surface (at least the elevators and ailerons) do a quick test up and down and then the plane's control surfaces and gear can be tested or cycled. But the ESC never comes up allowing me to run the propeller. I Have to rebind it before each time I want to check everything up in the shop. Then the prop and everything works fine. There is no indication of any movement of the control surfaces at any time like I would expect testing the gyro on the ground moving the airplane. Probably don't have the Spektrum DX 18 transmitter set up properly.

I don't really even need a gyro in this airplane as it is very stable without one based on my other jugs that I fly, but does anyone have any ideas how to get full use out of this receiver and gyro, especially since I have to rebind it before every flight? I could just order a 6 channel regular receiver but didn't want to give up on this one yet. Might learn something new, too.

    Thanks,

    Davegee

    1. The obvious thing is maybe you left the bind plug in place? You wouldn't be the first.

    2. Is the bind button up against something and being pushed in?

    3. AS3X doesn't initiate until the throttle has reached or exceeded 25%

    4. Moving a stabilized AR637T or TA receiver to a different plane is not just a matter of getting the orientation correct. It requires that you reset it from the forward programming menu or the stabilization is likely to work in the wrong direction. If it came from a BNF plane, chances are that it's locked anyway. You can find how to unlock it from numerous videos that you can find with a Google search.

Hi Kallend: thanks for those tips. I didn't use a bind plug, but the button built in that I held down until I got a rapid light flash on the receiver. The bind button is free and clear of anything that might interfere with its operation. I did not try running the throttle up to 25 per cent or greater once I got it bound with my transmitter. I'll try that to see if that unlocks the gyro and test to see if the control surfaces move in the correct direction.

Appreciate your time. I'll look at some online videos on this subject, too. I have a friend in town who is pretty savvy on this stuff that I might have him take a look at it, too.

      Best,

      Davegee

If you tell us what the solution was, it may help others with a similar problem in the future.

I never did pursue a solution for this receiver. I put it aside for now and purchased a very simple Lemon 7 channel receiver which works perfectly for this airplane. The flight characteristics for this airplane don't require the use of a gyro, IMHO.

                Cheers

When you get back to it, check out this blog. It has a wealth of information on reprogramming Spektrum stabilized receivers for different planes.
