  • Re: New Eagle Gyros

    Hi Mark,
Thanks for the info. Just got some of the Pro SE units in; about to install one on my new Sky Mule (got bashed around by 12mph winds pretty severely on maiden), so let me ask a 'tech support' question on these.

I know on older single-axis gyros, you had to mount them on the same axial plane they would be working in, eg flat for Ails, vertically & oriented properly for Pitch or Yaw, yada yada. I read the instruction sheet for the Eagle SE's - it only notes details for post-installation ops, not installation itself.

Any caveats re mounting this new 3-ax species?

The A3 Pro SE, A3-L, A3, and A3 Super must be mounted inline with the plane (flat, upside down, on its side, are all ok) , it cannot be mounted sideways in the fuselage. The new A3 must be mounted with the servo connecting pins facing towards the rear of the plane in order for the auto-hover feature to work correctly. Please see the manual for any of the gyros, they provide nice illustrations which show acceptable mounting positions.

      Hi Mark, (small world *LOL*)
I meant to come back here & tell you (y'all) I had gotten my answer to this question -- saw it in the manual I's about to print out when I was talking to you on the phone. But thanks anyway! \

Edit: Oops -- that was Matt I was talking to. Still, thanks. :)

Quick question on the new gyro's. They draw power from the ESC, does this impact the Ampage of the ESC. I'd hate to push it over the top and fry an ESC due to adding a Gyro.

Thanks and sorry if a stupid question, been flying a while now but still very new to all the electronics.

No more than, in fact far less than your servos drain. Just think of their actions at, roughly an amp per servo, & you can ballpark the loss involved. Every ESC I know of can take 'surge' voltages pretty well past their limit. Eg, I had a 3D plane that while setting up I tested with 3 different props, with watt readings - all within bounds. I accidently mounted the wrong prop before the maiden - thing flew well & I liked it so left it, still not realizing. Flew it 3 months & pancaked a landing one day hard enuff to break the prop. Back in the shop, discovered my error, & checking, realized I'd been pushing 73-76 Amps thru a 60A ESC the whole time.

But too, there's ESC's that'll blow if you look at 'em wrong. And the money ain't NO guarantee - believe that.

But all in all, if you have a plane where the ESC doesn't have a little what we call 'headroom' in the amperage allowance, you shouldn't have that ESC in there to start with, is more the rule of thumb.
My advice - don't worry about it, you should be covered.
