  • 4c 4000 in place of 3c 3000 in Dynam 1200 series size A/C

I'm considering upgrading the Dynam 1200 series A/C (not sure which yet) from 3c 3000 to 4c 4000 bats.
I'm sure I'll have to do some carving and using a larger esc. Will the standard motors be OK with this configuration?
I don't push them too hard but do some regular manuevers.

I'm assuming you mean 4S in place of 3S, where the number (4/3) means the cell count and S stands for Series, so 4S means 4 Series cells, or nominally 14.8V. Do you have a Watt meter? If not, get one before modifying the power system. If yes, measure the power/current with the 3S battery, to see how close to the motor and ESC limits it is. Going to 4S from 3S will more than double the Watts, and nearly double the Amps.

      You are right ... I meant 3s and 4s

I've run a Dynam 1200 mm P-51 for over 2 years on 4S. A bit of foam carving to get it in, but it does well with up to 4S 3300. Does better with 4S 3000. it can carry 4S 5000 but the CG gets far forward and i can't see cutting the canopy/hatch enough to move the battery further back.
Initially, I did this with the stock prop and ESC. I had no problems, but decided I wanted a 4-blade prop. Some calculations and a DuBro spinner (2 blade... cut extra holes for the 4-blade) and an APC 11X8 4 blade prop needed a motor upgrade to the motor out of the Me-109 to handle the added load. STILL the same ESC.

I did open the scale air scoop under the spinner and cut a semi-scale radiator outlet in the belly behind the wing, with 1/32 plywood for the side panels of the extended cooling opening. The ESC wire channel under the battery allows decent airflow over the ESC with this alteration.

The result calculates to the SAME "pitch speed" as the OEM motor and prop. It still flies just fine on 3S 2000. Actually slightly better than OEM due to the added weight of the bigger motor and MUCH heavier spinner.

This is my 2nd Dynam P-51. The first (bought from Nitroplanes because they were the Dynam only distributor I knew at the time) I was running 4S 3000 OEM prop, motor and ESC and had a mid-air while in RC combat with .25 glow models (and doing OK against them until the mid-air) I probably could have fixed it but that one was getting old and beat up so I ordered the replacement from MotionRC.

I'm lighting the plane up for night flight now. Going back to running 3S for compatibility with the lights running off the same battery as the motor.
FF gliders and rubber power since 1966, CL 1970-1990, RC since 1975.

current planes from 1/2 oz to 22 lbs
