Most RC forums have a section for RC events. RC events are a great way for semi-local flyers to get together and have a good time. We just did the Arizona Electric Festival here in Mesa this past weekend (and had a blast), and I'm looking forward to going to the Apollo XI Pizza Day and Fun-Fly in April.
