Type of paint or tape to cover foam

The battery compartment of my Flyzone Corsair continues to lose the paint around the outer edges because of scraping action when inserting the battery. Anyone have suggestions for the best cover for these edges. When I paint the area, the foam does not seem to hold the paint. I was thinking of electrical tape, but I do not know.

I have also used various colored electrical tape but from reading the various posts by others on similar topics they recommend using Miniwax polycrylic water based protective finish. I got mine at WalMart.
