Actually my favorite is Orocal 651, the 751 has better performance and a little easier to wrap curves, but is also 4 times the cost. 651 ($12.49 15" x 10yd) has a great color choices , I purchase thru us Cutter . Go to their home page top green banner click under vinyl cutting, The outdoor vinyl is what you are after ie, 651, 751, 951. For those who want mettalic covering go to their metallic vinyl for choices, these are a little difficult to install than the 651 series which is a breeze. Youi need to cut out individual panels to follow the planes panel lines. Orocals I have a ton of odds and ends and scraps of Orocal material if anyone would like to experiment shipping only

      CT,

751 does cost more, but I don't think it's four times, more like double. At US Cutter 651 purchased by the foot (12 in X 24 in) is $1.69 while 751 by the foot (also 12 in X 24 in) is $2.59. I rarely buy by the roll anymore unless it is a color I know I will use again. It is cheaper by the roll, but I was starting to have a collection of partial rolls taking up space in my basement.

ORACAL 651 vinyl is the most popular vinyl for long-term indoor use or short and medium-term outdoor use. 60+ colors available and sizes... USCutter offers 24" width Oracal 651 in lengths by the foot, 10 yard and 50 yard rolls.

Value-priced 8-year cast film offers impressive cutting and weeding properties as well as minimal shrinkage for durable, dimensionally stable applications such as architectural signage, vehicle and fleet graphics. It applies well to irregular surfaces, including corrugations and rivets.

I have used both and been pleased. The 751 is 2 mil thick v 651 2.5 mil thick, which makes the 751 easier to use as well as just a tiny bit lighter.

Either film will give you good results after you get the hang of using it.

Another interesting film by Oracal is their chrome polyester film. It is a very thin film, but is a little more challenging to use. If you are looking for a polished metal or chrome look, check it out.

15" ORACAL 351 is ideal for the decoration of transparent substrates, applications including decorative labels, name and technical plates, decoration and moldings, safety stickers, as well as cut letters and symbols. Available in chrome, matte chrome and two-sided gold

Does oracal have an adhesive backing or do you use 3m?

Is it repositionable? How do you cut it to fit perfectly between panel lines? This stuff looks great! Thanks, Doc

Wvrailfan, is your p-51 covered entirely in the film? If so which aluminum covering is it? How does it handle compound curves, can it be stretched over a wing tip for example?

Yes the P-51 is completely vinyl wrapped. The vinyl is very flexible and stretches around wing time easily once you get the hang of using it. I am posting some photos and tips in a separate thread. Hope it helps.

What color film did you use on your p-51 to achieve the aluminum look?

I have wrapped two Mustangs. The one pictured above is wrapped with 751 Silver Gray Metallic 090. I have also wrapped on with their polyester chrome film. It is harder to work with but gave me a polished show plane look.

I retired the first one after Lt Powel, the pilot of the real West By Gawd Virginian, autographed the plane.

Thanks wvrailfan, your p-51 looks beautiful. I saw on the oracal website in addition to chrome there is a brushed stainless, and those are 1mil thick film. Thank you for the tutorial also!
