  • P51 STREGA vs Tempest vs P51 War Bird Combat

Beautiful day in the PNW today, Clear blue skies, and 60 degrees. The field was hopping to say the least. Took my P51 Strega Reno racer for an adventure. A couple friends were there and had never seen the Strega before, and when I announced 85mph top speed right out of the box, the trash talking kicked in and the challenge was on. P51 Strega vs E-flights P51 BNF war bird powered with a 4 cell. Stock motor and ESC was claimed, vs Dynam Tempest, All stock 4 cell pack as well. The pylon flags were slightly moving and up we went. Around the first pylon in perfect formation and it was HAMMER TIME! Oh what a rush!!! Never have ever done anything like this before! The E-flight P51 jumped into a slight early lead, Strega second, Tempest right there to. Side by side 3 WIDE around the first set of pylons with the STREGA inching into to lead. Lap 2 Stega stretches it lead by 20 feet, E-flight P51 second, Tempest right there. By the 5th and final lap, P51 Strega had dominated, Stretching the lead by an entire straight a way. E-flights P51 second and the Dynam Tempest right there only losing by 10 -20 feet over the E-flight P51.

How the crowd was impressed! Not only with the Strega but with the other 2 birds as well. It was so exciting I will have to say. I looked inside the E-flight bird as every body wanted to see the motor and ESC was claimed stock. And it was. Factory motor and ESC in line with a 4 cell 2200 mah batt pack. IMPRESSIVE!!! The E-flight P51 BNF was fast! and maneuverable at speed. To take the lead off the start and into the first set of turns was outstanding. Excellent aircraft.  The Dynam Tempest was also impressive on the inside. Factory motor and ESC powered by a 4 cell 2200mah pack as well. It hung right in there the whole time. There was an air flow mod though for a better aero package through the scoop, or cowling. Made all the difference. When we opened the Strega, they knew why they were beat. Factory 70amp ESC powered by an Admiral 4 cell 3000mah pack which provided more consistent power over a 2200mah pack. I'm still doing 85mph at the end of the dog fight, there batt packs faded making there planes slower at the end of the run. All in all it was a great day. Came home all in one piece, and bragging rights toboot. Thank you MRC for selling such outstanding and reliable products. Will be placing another order soon. Thanks for reading.

      Aros,

I live in Clark County WA. The club CCRC.com has an rc airfield at Clark County fairgrounds. Its a pretty nice place. Whats funny is that the airfield doubles as over flow parking when the fair is there. The light poles in place double as pylons for racing. We have a 300' paved run way as well. During the fair when the field is closed to rc planes, I just travel out towards Beaverton OR. Off of HWY 26 there is another rc field. Its really nice. 700 feet of tarmack thats around 50 feet wide. I cant remember the name of the place though, lol  :D

I have to admit that I am jealous! First that you have such a nice flying area and  a paved landing area, plus that you have such nice weather there for flying! Sounds like you had a good time with the pylon races too. That sounds like it was a fun to watch and to actually fly the planes for that race.

Glad to know that the other two did well, I have both, but have not built either one yet. I have built the Bf-109 Dynam and it seems pretty quick, but not sure it would hit 85mph as it is in box stock form. Still, a great flying plane that I really enjoy.

Keep up the reviews! Those are stuck on the ground due to the weather love reading about them!

          Loneflier,

I know right? Whats up with the weird weather, Normal weather here for this time of year is a cold east wind out of the Columbia River gorge. Its been unseasonably worm this year. Then I see in the news about all that snow back east. I like snow, but I'm not complaining either.

I have had great success with Dynam products. They are reliable and sturdy. Some I've found need landing gear up grades right out of the box, but no complaints on the electronics or servos. I was shocked and surprised as I expected to walk the dog and kick the cat all over the Tempest and E-flights P51, But I had to earn the first 2 laps. I got em in the corners at first, then there batts started to fade and I started pulling on the straight. I still cant believe it.
The Tempest only had a cowling mod in the scoop for better aero, and I think there was more than meets the eye to the E-flight P51. It was almost as fast as my Strega for sure. Happy flying Loneflier and good to hear from you

I am truly inspired by your story I have never had a P-51 but I really need to get one now. I looked it online and found a P-51D Mustang Warbird With Retracts 5Ch RTF with a Wingspan: 1200mm/ 47'' at http://www.thehobbyworx.com/rc-planes/war-birds/dynam-8939-p-51d-mustang-warbird-w-retracts-rtf-5-channels-rc-plane.html , I have never had one so would you advise that I go for this one ? its comes with a 950kv Brushless motor. Also a big reason which is making me choose this one is the price its priced at just $229.99. What do you think guys, would you say it is a decent deal? Feedback would be highly appreciated.

Hey dont do that!!!!! Have you checked MRC's price on this same P51? Only $169. bucks. and you get great customer service as well. Plus Mrc has all the parts and up grades in stock most of the time. Your here on there forum, Click airplanes and go the war birds.   :exclamation:

I have this plane in my hanger. Heres the Skinny. Great aircraft. Flies very well and has optional flaps. You haft to buy and install the flap servos though, and do a little cutting of the foam to make operational. Retracts are ok. The strut rod on the retract is a little weak and bends a little easy on hard landings, but bends back easy to. It is a 3s batt set up. Up grade the ESC to a 40 amp and you can run a 4s batt. The motor will handle it but make sure you give it plenty of time in between flights on the 4s batt to cool the motor. Also if you run the 4s an air flow mod for better cooling through the fuse is highly recommended.

Then if u really want it to be super zippy, Install a 50 amp ESC, with a Dynam 650kv motor out of a Dynam SU26, or Dynam Hawker Hurricain. Install a 12x12 single blade prop, 4s batt pack and you got a little ripper.

The one bad habbit this planes has is, make sure your plane is balanced. It dont like to be nose heavy at all. If you balance this one nose heavy, landing this bird will be a choir, and nose over on the prop every single  time.

Happy flying and good luck from the Pacific NW

+1 Motion RC is the only place I will go for my RC needs, they just take way too good care of their customers... Motion don't have customer service agents; they have customer care agents, as they all care about their customers.
