Customizing EDF jets

You can use acetone to take off the paint. It doesn't hurt EPO foam. Then, I brush on two coats of Minwax polycrylic gloss. Then I paint airbrush or rattle can, the plane ( I prefer Tamiya acrylics). Then I rattlecan Minwax satin over the finished project. For large areas I do use rattle can colors from the hardware store. By putting on an initial coat of Minwax, spraying enamels won't eat the foam. RcGeek has some great videos on this process on YouTube.

Hi, can you tell me what type of paint you used to paint your jets.

For most of my warbirds I used to use enamel like Testor's or Model Makers rattle cans...But they are so expensive for the amount you get so I started going to the hardware store and buying my enamels in the spray cans almost three times the size, at a fraction of the price of Testor's/MM small cans.

I can't recall the exact brand that I used for the Blue Angel and Corsair but it was the darkest navy blue gloss I could find.

Important Note: While you can use enamel on EPP/EPO foam, it's absolutely vital that you spray several LIGHT coats to build up the base before spraying more liberally. If you start out heavy, it could eat some of the foam (especially the Freewing F-18 which is EPP and more sensitive to enamel), but this has only been an issue if I sprayed too thick of coats initially. All-in-all I've never had an issue using enamel on my airplanes for the most part. The end result can be absolutely transformative.

Most modelers I know including myself use acrylics on EPO using both brush or gun.

I've used the rattle cans myself for Polycrylic without issue. Callie is pretty good for not requiring dimensions as long as you provide her with the manufacturer, wingspan and other relevant detail. Obscure planes she may require more info but she has amassed quite a database over the years on dimensions. Only rarely has she been off a bit on the particular sizes and she is quick to make things right and get the right size out to you asap.

Quick question.... I just went out and got a quart each of the satin and the gloss Polycrylic. I've seen vairious posts in the forum here on how to apply it. Some brush it on, some spray it on, and some use a paper towel or foam brush. Any comments on any of those methods?

For what purpose do you want to apply a "skin covering"? If it is for minor ding protection and wipeablility, I recommend Water Based Polyurethane. Sold in the US as Minwax brand's "Polycrylic". Some people use the spray on version but I prefer the brush on version. Satin sheen for warbirds, gloss sheen for airliners.

Callie's Graphics, as Aros mentioned, is an industry favorite. I've used her excellent decal services for prototype aircraft in the past, and for customizing personal projects. Her quality, friendliness, response time, and flexibility is unmatched for decal-makers in the hobby, in my opinion.

I don't know about skin covering, but for decals, you can always try ebay, but my opinion the best way is to make your own.  Just google what you want and look under the images tab, then you can save the photos/decals, resize them however you want, then print them onto sticker paper.  This what I've used:

Once on the plane I then cover the decal with clear tape just to be sure it stays on there.  Works well, and is a great way to do it if you need a certain obscure decal in just the right size, etc.  I took mine to Staples to be printed, and had them do it at the highest resolution in color possible (my home printer wouldn't do it very well).

Guys, I am customizing my jet and would like some tips from anyone on how to apply the best type of skin covering and which one would be the best to get? As well, if anyone has any ideas or knows where to get some airline decals let me know. I would like to make my Dynam turbojet into a American airlines commuter plane. I would like to hear how you guys do some customizations as well. I have been out of line for a few years but I'm getting back into it now. I have three planes I'm working with. I have a dynam turbo jet, a dynam Trojan t28 and just purchased a Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
