I don't know about the CG yet Doc. I still have to get all the electronics (receiver/gyro/battery) installed. I will definitely keep everyone informed. Thanks for the nice words on the build. You too farmflyer.

By the way I cheated a little on the rigging my 23 year old son did it. Younger more nimble fingers made it look easier. Lol

RE: Dynam Tiger Moth is in!

I hear you, I needed a second, very tiny pair of hands. One thing I noticed during the construction, is that the foam on this plane is very soft. I put all kinds of tiny marks in it by not doing anything drastic. I saw that I had put two good sized dents in the wing leading edge so I got out the old foam finish and fixed them. I put a coat of hobby coat along both wing edges and underneath the bottom wing edges ( to help with wing scrapes maybe? ). Hey, I just bought that stuff, let's see if it works. The upper edge of the main body compartment, under the removable cockpit, is very soft too and I found that just barely putting any pressure on the top edge caused an unsightly dent. I discovered this after pushing in the landing gear and having my hand holding the plane in that area. When I flipped it over, all dented along the edge....more foam finish and a coat of hobby coat.
Just a heads up for you guys that might not have started yet.

The Tiger Moth is completed....at least with the build.  I still have the electronics to install.  I finally received the two correct sized pilots from China and I performed a few mods to those guys.  They were exactly the same part number, but each one is a tiny bit different.  That's good though, that is what I wanted.  One has a lighter complexion and one has a lighter helmet. Because they were looking the same way I performed a lobotomy (actually cut his head totally off) and repositioned it on the rear guy.  I gave him a scarf to cover the scar!  The front guy is the rough type with a growth of beard.
Anyway, I think the plane looks good. The Callie Graphics made a world of difference.  Still a lot of painting too. Now for the electronics install and CG setup.  Then......FLYING it!

Great job! I'm sure she'll fly as good as she looks :D .

Dang!!! Those are the first pilots I've ever seen that look "right". They actually look realistic. Where did you get them?!! Doc

Doc, they are from HobbyKing. They are only from the International warehouse so that is why it takes upwards of 2 weeks to get them. Cheap, 3-4 bucks each! Including the shipping from overseas, it was about 13 bucks total. They are very realistic and painted well.

Got them from HobbyKing. They are actually the best looking ones I have seen too.

I checked the HK pilots out...very nice, although, a bit heavy. Too bad they're not in the US warehouse. I'm a mold maker and bronze sculptor. I'm thinking of buying the ones I like and make foam castings. Unethical? Maybe, but I'm pretty sure the Chinese ripped these off from an American artist. Foam would be soooo much lighter. Besides, it would be fun to cast and paint them. Illegal? I don't know. I would certainly not mass produce them for sale. Doc

RE: Dynam Tiger Moth is in!

I was dry fitting my TM and found that the lower wing root does not match up at the fuselage. Has anyone else noticed this? If I screw the wing all the way down the root won't match. If I shim and screw the wing down to that, it will match, but it will change the wing incidence. I don't know whether to go for appearance, or not take a chance on changing the flight characteristics. Any input? thanks, Doc

Mine was fine Doc, everything fit good.

RE: Dynam Tiger Moth is in!

Finally got around to finishing up the TM. I put in an Eagle gyro and have all the electronics working fine.  Now I "tried" to check the CG.  Not so easy.  My Great Planes CG tool will not work now that all the rigging is on.  The CG is too far back on the top wing for me to get the legs of the toll into.  So I relied on the ole fingertip trick.  I don't like this method as it leaves a lot for slop.
She was too tail heavy, even with the 2200 Admiral all the way up front.  I added 2oz of lead to the cowl and she is still a bit too tail heavy.  I'm going to carve out a bit of foam in the forward area and try to push the battery in about 1/2 further and see if that helps.

                            Retiredflyer,

I am very close to pulling the trigger on a tiggy and have read some long forums to gather information. Quick question; Did you apply your Callie graphics on the polyurethane or before applying polyurethane? Also, do you apply polyurethane to the plastic parts?

                            Thank you

I applied the graphics BEFORE I did the entire plane in poly.  I covered the graphics and the plastic pieces.  Figured it couldn't hurt.  Came out fine.

Finally got my TM together, only to find the tail fins warped. Vertical stab curved to the right. Horizontal stab curved upwards. Received replacements. They're exactly the same. It's the mold. With a little heat, I corrected the problem. Now, about the wires. Much too tight. The upper wing was straight untill I installed the wires. Afterwards, the wing was curved upwards, one more than the other. I suppose it would make it more stable if both wings were warped the same. Dynam should use springs on the wires, as so many other companies do. The spar can't handle the tension. Now, balance. Even with a 2500 50c 4s battery with foam removed and pushed to the motor mount, it will not balance level. 40g of lead all the way foreward just levels it. I haven't heard about these problems from anyone else. Did I get a lemon or do people just put these things together and go fly 'em? Thanks, Doc

We did not have any of these issues. Fly with a admiral 2500 4s or a 2650 fms no extra weight balanced out just a tad nose heavy.
