Well, now we have to call the control tower, AND the airport mgr. 5 minutes before we fly our "toy" airplanes and immediately when we stop! The club's air strip and the soccer field where we fly are within 5 miles of the Santa Fe airport. Now I'm going to ask the guys, before we fly, if anyone has called the FCT. ( F...ing control tower). I'm sure the control tower doesn't want to be bothered with this any more than we do.THANK YOU to the F...ing irresponsible drone flyers!!! Can you tell I'm irritated?!!! RE: FAA ruling
No, it's not local, it's the Federal Aviation Agency. However, if there is no control tower or airport mgr. I would imagine you are safe to fly without notification. This situation doesn't seem to be mentioned in the new edict. I guess the FAA, in all it's wisdom, didn't check the charts... yes, there are still airfields with no control tower!!! RE: FAA ruling
Our club field is within 3 miles of Chicago O'Hare Intl. Airport. Our only restriction so far is 400 ft. max altitude which is in accordance with AMA directives. I really don't think after 40 years of flying there the airport tower wants us to call them every time we fly nor have they asked us to.

RE: FAA ruling
Have you read the new FAA ruling? I'm sure the tower doesn't like this any more than we do. Unless the Santa Fe airport manager, control tower, AMA, and our club president are mistaken... Like it or not, it's coming. I'd be willing to bet this whole thing will blow over and we'll be back to normal. However, one accident while not following the FAA rules..you've had it. RE: FAA ruling
I fly both planes and (drones) quad-copters. Have the Phantom 3 pro and a hex home-built plus home-built quad. I prefer the quads due to not having take of space being critical. I have a 24" tv hooked up to my hdmi port on the phantom controller and the image is stunning also the nature shots. I'm on the edge of NFZ so just about make it if I fly from home and away from NFZ. It's the irresponsible people making it a pain for us. I was worried it would overflow into the winged aircraft flights. I don't have issue with the registration since we already have to register so much including ourselves. LOL 5 miles is too far a limit. Just make the limit shorter and keep it at 400ft. I know the importance of aircraft safety. I was stationed on an aircraft carrier. That landing field is smallllllllllllll.

RE: FAA ruling IMPORTANT!
Now, the FAA is looking into making us register our planes!!!! Unbelievable! By law, all aircraft must be registered, however model planes have been ignored up to now. Today is the last day to register your comments. I just learned about this from Tower Hobbies. Go to regulations.gov ,then to... Clarification of applicability of aircraft registration requirements for unmanned aircraft systems. Send them your thoughts on this. Try to be nice! Doc

I submitted my response yesterday, and specifically asked that traditional planes be excluded from registration. I just dont see how any of these registration will help. The only thing it will do is put more burden and costs on the ethical flyers. Those that are causing the problems won't bother with registration or will find a way around it!

RE: FAA ruling
Word still from the AMA is to hold off from registering at the moment until February 19th I do believe which is the last of the 30 rule. The AMA is suppose to let us know something when they know more. As they say The best thing to do any how is to put your name, phone # and AMA# on a card or something on your flying object or what ever you may fly.Still Learning:D

RE: FAA ruling
Before it has always been:
Just ask the local airport to mark the chart: Potential RC model aircraft operations to XXXXX ft.
Yes, you can get them to mark it for 2500 ft AGL.
If you are out of the normal take-off and landing patterns they generally don't care as long as the RC models give way to full scale.
They really don't want you calling them every time someone shows up at the model airfield... They just want you to keep out of the way of full scale traffic.
If it causes the Airport management to get annoyed with all the calls they'll stop saying "OK, go for it"
If you aren't a problem and they know you have never been a problem they'll be glad to mark the chart.
Note that the AMA RC Pattern Aerobatics competition "box" exceeds 800 ft before the maneuver is penalized for exceeding allowed height. And that has been a standard part of the competition regulations for over 20 years.
No one ever complains about it... because the competitors will immediately clear the airspace if a full scale shows up.FF gliders and rubber power since 1966, CL 1970-1990, RC since 1975.
current planes from 1/2 oz to 22 lbs
