  • New old guy on the block

    Howdy folks,

I think I'm a new guy to the R/C world after reading through the many topics. The last time I had any connection to the R/C flying world was back in around 1975. Things have sure changed over the years and I see I have a learning curve to overcome.

For starters, all the acronyms. For starters ESC, BEC, ATR, to name a few. Back then a 4 channel radio did just about ever Sunday flyer neede. Oh sure, there were those who did some tricking out of their birds and has 6 or maybe even 8 channels. Those were the big spenders, maybe one or 2 had helicopters. Now it seems like 6 channels is a pretty basic system.

Well, I'm just happy to have found a forum where so many people are so willing to help. This old guy is going to need quite a bit.

I've been thinking about getting active again for the past 6 months or so. I wanted to see if I could find a forum just like this one and the one over on Motion R/C.

I'm sorry I got so long winded on my introduction. I do tend to get that way from time to time. I'll try to be more brief in the future.

    So, greetings all,
    Waggs
    Thanks,
    Waggs

      Welcome Waggs!

. Like you I flew back in the late 70s when everything was GAS and wood. I took a 30yr. break and got back in 4 yrs back and loving electrics and foamies. Take your time and research Motions help glossary and don't be afraid to ask questions here on the squawk. There is a great bunch of guys here who are willing to help you. Good luck and enjoy a new old hobby.

Thanks all for the warm welcome.

It will be nice flying without having to clean up all the fuel that flowed into every nook and soaked the balsa wood.

            Thanks,

Welcome Waggs. I am sure you will enjoy the forum. It's almost addictive as flying. This is my main entertainment when at home and not working on my planes.

Oh yeah. Love the videos. I could spend a lot of money really fast if I had it. Just from the videos alone.

                              Welcome sir <salute>

I too am coming back to the hobby after a few years away. It's great. I'll be happy to help you any way I can. I think you will find the radios, equipment, and aircraft to be so much better today than they were back then. And they are more complicated. Take it easy and enjoy the learning process.

LOL. I was about to get a divorce, had served 4 years in the Coast Guard and had 2 years of college under my belt.

As time goes by, you will begin to see that those on RC Groups can tend to be a bit "cliquey". They are in the minority but they are also the ones who are the most vocal (NOT in a good way) and they are the ones who general tend to "rule the roost" on many of the threads there. Add to that, the moderators there seem to "God" complexes or some form of mental health issues. After thousands and thousands of posts there, I left and have never posted there again. I only go there to milk it for information.
If it's any comfort to you, I didn't start flying RC till after I retired. Made many mistakes but learned a lot from them. Been at it for about 6 years or so now. Love it! Addicted to it!

I hated having to give up the R/C addiction but the divorce meant relocation which meant kind of starting all over.
RCgroup, I think I gave it up for the same reasons you mentioned. They can be very rude.
                                      Thanks,

In short I agree! So far here folks seem to be very laid back! That's me no drama, I gave up putting up with that the day I retired😃
