  • RE: All us newbie pilots, lets share..

As a newbie I'll share what I have learned in the last 6 months or so.

    1. Respect the wind. If the wind is strong enough to blow your plane over it is probably not a good idea to fly.
    2. If you have the opportunity to join a club do it and let experienced pilots teach you how to fly. After destroying approx 8 planes I finally joined my local club.
    3. Fly 3 mistakes high, meaning have enough altitude to recover should you get in trouble.
    4. Price does not necessarily mean easier to fly.
    5. SAFE enabled planes help build confidence in my opinion.
    6. Flight simulators are a useful tool in my opinion.
    7. Larger planes in my opinion are easier to fly and can handle the wind so much better.

These are a few things I have learned on my journey to become a rc pilot.

Hey, don't forget that time Springs ahead next weekend, so starts Spring, so starts what we all like to call Crash Season!
Yes folks its that time of year again when we all get to take our Christmas presents out to the flying field and see what happens.  And MotionRC watches as the demand for spare parts skyrockets again!  There is a sudden spike in UPS and USPS deliveries, "Hire more drivers" they yell, the RC guys are at it again.
"Hi Dan, would you like to sign up for our frequent crashers discount?"

                Greetings GMan,

Hey, I'll be as happy as everyone else to see spring roll around once again!!
However, I'm not sure I want to term it "Crash Season"

Sure, there will be a few here and there (not me, I hope) but, how about we spin it in a bit more positive direction??

                :D  :D  :D

Yep, I hear you Bill!  Just joking, but definitely getting closer to flight season.  Just got back from a quick spin with the Waco.  It's a beautiful day here in Cody, but the wind is up a little bit more than what is comfortable with her and the temp is below freezing.  Ran one battery in her and was frozen through so called her a successful day!
Stay tuned, got a video loading, first one for me.
I was checking out Stoopid Monkey's build video and comparing his sequencer to the one that Shangrila came with.  Totally different!
Here's a picture of the one mine came with, the mess of wires  there on the table, anyone know what its from.  Ended up modding the sequencer and making it match BBD's, but still have one plug left over and the pin box(?) don't know what the heck that is!

It worked ok for you but in the air it would be awful...

I tried the Pandora out mostly on the ground trying to get her to track straight.  Finally took her over to a grass field and gunned it , up she went, "great " I thought. Went into my first turn, oh oh.  The Spectrum 6i has a bad habit of setting up ailerons in reverse.  New plane left is right right is left... You get the picture.  Shakey landing, actually was doing well until she found a post near the ground, result, one broken prop and a little damage that some gluing on the landin gear fair fixed easily.
Lesson one. ALWAYS check the control directions!!! Its easy with rudder and elevator, ailerons, well, I missed it.  Should have known because the Mustang had the same thing, fortunately I found that before putting it in the air.
Today was much better, Ol' Weedwacker flew well and made me feel better.
                                    Hi

Hi Grossman56    I just wanted to let you know that when you set up your plane if its made in China more than likely your controls will have to be reversed when using Spektrum transmitters. I have  both DX6I and the DX8 and find this true in most planes the E-Flite planes are usually right.

i just wanted to add that just about everyone has done the same thing which leads up to always checking controls directions before Every flight :D

Yes, I learned that one the hard way.  That was P-1, she took a beating those first few flights.  I think it was the next one that she crashed and burned!  She survived it all and the only thing I replaced on her was the ESC and the and the vertical stabilizer (The stab is still good but the hinges are wonky) and of course the always replacing main landing gear.
Now look at her, all painted up in Red, White and Blue and looking as pretty as ever.  She's my 'go to' plane at present just 'cause she such a relaxed plane to fly.  By the way, the fire caused minor fus damage but she needed a new ESC, so I put in a 50 FMS ESC as the 30A stock one doesn't give you anything to work with if you want to, say go a stronger prop.  I put a fair amount of Gorrilla Glue down onto the inside of the nose where there was some fire damage which seemed to work really well, then filled in a dimple on the underside of the nose
with some Epoxy/Resin, which could explain why she's more nose heavy than P-2, never thought of that!

YES! Always check your controls! And mind that live prop! Grossman, I crashed one of my Art-Tech Pitts. It was in pieces! Instead of trashing it, I glued the whole thing back together, beefed it up, added much more power and now have a great aerobatic plane that I love to fly. It pays to not give up. The Doctor

Same with me.  I haven't lost a plane yet (touch wood), for all the crashing that the Pandoras and Weedwacker took, they still grace the skies over Cody. The crash referred to was the first flight in Pandora One last summer.  As I said, the ESC burned out, but she's back in the air, none the worse for it and she flies great!

Been taking the Waco over to the school parking lot, which is so close I can throw a rock from my front yard and hit it.  Just to try her on paved, even ground when the wind is down.  She's the most challenging of my birds thus far so I figure if I can fly her, I can fly the P51's.

I had to eliminate the pin board at the end (it just plugged in) and it has an extra output plug as well, its a strange one
