  • All us newbie pilots, lets share..

    Hi guys and gals!
Had an idea that might help all of us new-to-the-sport pilots. Lets start a topic where we can combine our experiences and misadventures so we don't have to search as much for answers. Also, I'd love to see the more experienced guys and gals chime in with their thoughts as well, in an effort to raise our level of confidence.
As some of you may know, I started this summer with Ol' Weed Wacker, my Hobbyzone Piper Cub.
I probably went the way a lot of you are going, dreaming of Mustangs, but realizing that I had to gain a lot of experience before that happens. So, I invested in RF Real Flight Sim, and have put hours and hours in on that.
Flying time here in Cody Wyoming is kind of limited to early mornings and later in the evening because of the winds.
Anyway, I've learned a few things about the Hobbyzone Piper Cub that you just don't read anywhere. First, they are TOUGH!!! Mine has been over the curb and into the grass (hence the name) through a prop and two noses (keep a few in stock). Take offs , at least to me, are challenging. She wants to run to the left just at the point of take off. She wants one more taste of the weeds first. Ok, so whats wrong? The first thing I did was check my landing gear to make sure all the mishaps hadn't bent it, sure enough, out with the plyers and some straightening, a little dry silicone lube on the axles, good as new, right? Wrong! That's when I noticed something interesting, when you first fire up the system (plane and radio), I, at least, my system (the stock system that comes with the RTF package) have to have the throttle trim completely retarted in order for the throttle to work at all. Once I've retarded it and put some throttle to it, I can reset it to the neutral trim position and she works great. Now for that take off. All trim at neutral, line her up and advance the throttle quickly but smoothly to full, keeping about three quarters back elevator. Now, she'll come off the ground before she heads for the weeds, the trick, is right after she breaks ground, you gotta watch that nose, keep her down as close to level or just slightly up as you can. Get your speed up and get some altitude at about three quarters then back off to half throttle and check your trim.
Landings are relatively easy, back off to about one quarter throttle on final, bring her into the wind and aligned with the runway. What I do is back the throttle right off and then advance it about three clicks. Guide her easily down and watch those wheels kiss the ground, make sure that the prop is still active, but it really doesn have to be very much, once she's down, the weeds look mighty good so be prepared as she vears off to you left, her right, I've noticed that there is a slight delay when you go to correct this, so I anticipate it. Did three batteries worth of flying this morning. Seven or eight takeoffs and landings in a row! Was back home at 0810.

Re: All us newbie pilots, lets share..

    Greetings,

Sounds like you're getting the hang of things and more importantly you're having fun!!

I totally understand your desire to gather like-minded individuals with similar skill sets and share information and experiences. But, isn't this whole forum really just that?

Unless of course you're speaking of asking MRC to add a whole new topic area within the forum's main page just for "newbies"? That would make sifting through the many topic areas less hectic when looking for help and/or shared learning experiences.

Good Luck, I will surely assist when appropriate, but I believe everyone of our forum members, regardless of skill level and experience, reads all of the posts and eagerly provide assistance and input where they feel they can provide the most benefit.

    Clear Skies,

Hi Bill, thats exactly it, I just felt it would be better here than in a separate page. Hoping that other newbies will share their experiences and that you more advanced pilots would be kind enough (as you have been) to offer advice.
I thought I'd put it out there and see what happens. It has been great here and I thought this might make it a little easier, don't know, we'll see...

The Freewing Pandora arrived today and I'm jacked!
I'm hoping that the old addage "If she looks great she'll fly great" is true, cause she's sure beautiful. I went the red paint scheme thinking it may be easier to see against the blue sky. Well, I'm off to assemble her and I can't wait to try her out. I'm going to use the Spectrum DX6i, if anyone has any suggestions on the settings, I'd appreciate it.
        Stay tuned for more (mis)adventures

Ok, Saturday was a misadventure! I tried the Pandora out mostly on the ground trying to get her to track straight. Finally took her over to a grass field and gunned it , up she went, "great " I thought. Went into my first turn, oh oh. The Spectrum 6i has a bad habit of setting up ailerons in reverse. New plane left is right right is left... You get the picture. Shakey landing, actually was doing well until she found a post near the ground, result, one broken prop and a little damage that some gluing on the landin gear fair fixed easily.
Lesson one. ALWAYS check the control directions!!! Its easy with rudder and elevator, ailerons, well, I missed it. Should have known because the Mustang had the same thing, fortunately I found that before putting it in the air.
Today was much better, Ol' Weedwacker flew well and made me feel better.

              Crash and Burn, literally!
I'm really having trouble with my Pandora. This time I had to give her full throttle just to get airborne, then she wallowed and stalled, just not enough power. Crashed from about three feet in the air and started smoking. I immediately unplugged the battery, but the ESC was completely fried
So, I'm trying to figure this one out (CSI Cody). I'm thinking that maybe after the last mishap with the reversed ailerons, I may have damaged the esc in a not-too-pretty landing. When I watch pilot Ryan fly his, she just launches into the air. Fortunately, most of the fuselage damage seems to be soot, a bit of melting, but doesn't appear to be serious. MotionRC shows the Pandora ESC as out of stock, has anyone tried a different ESC with the stock motor?

Re: All us newbie pilots, lets share..

More likely, you damaged the motor when the prop broke, and it was dragging, taking more current that the ESC was up to providing. Stock on 3S, the motor draws almost 30 amps, so you have little margin for error; just a little drag in the motor will put it over the top. If you don't have one, get a wattmeter, and always test a motor that could be suspect.

Yes, because of the narrow margin, I replaced the stock ESC with a 45A rated ESC. It actually gets a couple more watts out of the motor, probably due to less resistance in the output transistors, but could be better timing, too.

Re: All us newbie pilots, lets share..

                  Greetings Guys,

I agree that the more likely candidate is the excess draw from the motor caused an excessive current draw from the ECS. I had this happen early on with a Flyzone Sensei. A very small piece of debris got into the motor housing (just big enough to add some additional drag) and it really wasn't appearant in flight or performance until the motor simply quit in flight. Fortunately I salvaged the plane but the ESC was toast which in turn fried the coils in the motor.

A new motor (which is major surgury on a Sensei) and 50A ESC later (up from 40A) all was right with the world again. A bent rotor shaft could also cause direct contact between the magnets and a coil(s) which dead short the motor and ESC definately smoking the Power train.

No fun, no matter how you slice it!!

Thanks guys, I'll check that out as well. I'm going through her with a fine tooth combe once I've got all the parts again. Took Old Weedwacker up right after the incident and flew her fine, cross wind landings and all. I've got her down now, at least it helped my tarnished ego a little. Was back out this morning as well, if only she had a bit more power, I keep thinking, which leads into the logical choice of the Pandora.
By the way, I've noticed that her (Weedwacker) elevator will move up and down on its own, not much but like she's wiggling her tail, could this be a servo problem?

By the way , Wintrsol, which 45 amp ESC was that that you used? I'm thinking an FMS ESC would work

So, call me crazy, but instead of nickle and dimeing myself, I just broke down and bought a second Pandora. Number one will become a hangar Queen if need be, but I would like to make her a winter project, put in the flaps, get a new ESC and a bit more agressive prop. I have her set up in the low wing configuration with the motor off, took some gorrilla glue and loaded it into the burnt areas, seems to work very well. I also coated her with Minwax Polycrylic. It takes a lot of prep work and even then I found the first coat didn't look great,by the third though, she just shines. Weed Wacker got coated as well and Pandora number 2 which is assembled, hey I'm getting real good at assembly! Anyway, the interesting thing was that Number 2 balanced out at 75 mm on the CG machine with no trouble whereas Number 1 was always nose heavy (The battery does have to be back so that 3/4 of it is behind the strap) Took her out for taxi trials and the rudder and tail wheel seem synced. Took her for a plough over the front lawn and she bumped along no problem. Ran her through the throttle as well, no taking chances on ESCs again.

                          Greetings G56,

Been there done that. When I first started out in RC I attempted to fly inverted - way beyond my current skill set - and crashed my Flyzone Sensei (best trainer on the market). After recovering the carnage, I nobley stated that it was not a problem and that I would have it flight worthy in no time.

Once home, and after really have a chance to inspect the damage I quickly discerned that I now had decent back-up supply plane and purchased a new one. I see no shame in that game!!

Best of luck with the Pandora re-boot.

                            Greetings Rocketeer,

I did the same thing last season. After being out of rc for thirty years I got back in last year. I to started with the Flyzone Sensei and was doing quite well. Toward the end of the season I thought I would try flying inverted having become comfortable with the Sensei. Well dumb thumbs and to low to recover I lawn darted. The damage was to the fuse was beyond repair but everything else was salvageable. I ordered a new fuse from Motion Rc one and a half days later it was on my doorstep. You can't beat there service. I'm back in business and love the Sensei. Haven't tried inverted again just enjoying pattern flying and mild aerobatics for now. Good flying!

I tried RC planes briefly over 25 years ago but never had the time to develop the skills needed to fly and gave up but never put it out of my mind. I have retired and now I have the time to learn and practice on my Real Flight simulator. I have been flying over 3 years now. Entering the hobby now is so much more advantageous then decades ago.

After watching my uncle auger in his corsair due to a mechanical malfunction, I started taking pre-flight inspections more seriously. Part of that is checking control direction, wiggling each surface with my hand, and doing a visual on the linkages. Remember kids, we all crash, lets not have it be due to a $0.10 clevis or something like that.
                                  Have fun and good luck.

I'm in complete agreement, you cannot overdue a preflight, so I'm learning.
I finally found out where the RC flight club here in Cody flies, or more accurately, used to...
Can't seem to get ahold of anyone and there was no contact information. I believe they are (were) called the Wyoming Sage Hoppers if anyone knows anything. Anyay, the runway is pretty rough but its in a nice open area north of town. Tried Ol' Weedwacker up there and she lost a tailwheel to the cracks! Mind you her tail wheel is pretty small, her main gear being about the size of the Pandora's tailwheel. I've got a couple of bags of sandbox sand that I'm not using so I think I'll use that to fill in enough runway to make it usable, if anyone ever shows up, it would be nice. Good place to try P-2 out, the basement is starting to look like my own private Airforce. Anyone know the limit before the wife gets mad?

I've been coating my airplanes with Minwax Acrylic, just finished the Mustang and wow does it look good!
I have the BBD version of the FMS 1400 Mustang,in case you didn't know, and since its already painted, I just applied Minwax over it and it really makes it pretty. The decal colors are much more vivid and the black colors are really black now. Looks like she's just been waxed. I'd highly recommend trying this to anyone.
All four of mine are coated now
