  • The Battles, Like The Comments, Continue!!

    Greetings Gang,

Does anyone besides me still have to endure the "Put a muffler on it!!", or, "Hey, you forgot your motor!!" comments in reference to your electrics at your flying field from the 'purest' Nitro-Heads?? Or, my favorite... When I'm flying an EDF, making a low pass, go into a beautiful vertical about mid-runway, kill the throttle at the apex to begin a slow dive only to hear one of the Nitro-Heads - during that brief moment of silence - say to his buddy, "Oh, Thank God!!". I mean, when is it going to end!!??

There is even a rumor at our "club" that one member wants to run for club President next year JUST so he can weed out anyone who still flies 72MHz (Nitro) and or Electrics of any kind!!! Really!!???

I mean, I have even purchased and flown a couple of nitro planes with the expressed belief that after flying those they would leave off the comments when I'm flying my electrics....No Way.

Yesterday, there was a guy preparing to fly quite a large Gas/Nitro type plane in the pit area close to mine and I heard him say to his friend that if they angle the plane just so and go full throttle, they might be able to blow my electrics/foamies off the field. Again, Really!!!????

I simply and quietly went to my Jeep, accessed my 1911 (Oklahoma is an open carry state) walked over and proceeded to point it at his big, expensive gas motor and asked him if he still wanted to blow away my planes!!?? Of course "He was just kidding".

Now, in fairness not everyone voices or holds such an opinion. There are a few forward thinkers out there. But, it's really getting old and can take the air out of your balloon at the flying field regardless of how well you think your flying that day or how scale-detailed your plane is or the fact that you've already flown your electrics four times while they're still trying to get their nitro-engine to idle!!!

Please understand, I'm primarilly venting here and as the saying goes, misery loves company. I will continue to pay my dues and fly (as long as I can) at the club field and enjoy the company of some of the more like-minded members. It would however be a lot more fun without the comments.

Sounds like you got some real ass***** in your club. I think they might be jealous because they don't have a clue as to how set up or fly an electric powered plane. Their Monokote balsa planes can not hold a candle to the high detail that EPO foam planes are made with today. Like you, I usually can get 3 flights in while they are still adjusting their carburetors. We have a max allowed of 40 members and I have yet to met any that were not decent people. There are very few electric RC pilots in our club but one is a pro that competes nationally. I fly in the mornings because there is usually less winds and it is cooler. Most others fly near noon or later in the day. We only have a few "morning" flyers and most of the time I have the field to myself which is the way I like it. Are there any other RC clubs near you that you might want to explorer?

      Greetings Baron,

While I wouldn't actually call them Ass*****, I could certainly understand how they would appear that way. At heart they're not bad people, they're just set in their ways. And I really don't care how they feel about electrics or the people who fly them. I'm just tired of hearing the jibes, kidding or not.

We have a strict club safety policy against anyone flying at our field alone, or at least it's highly discouraged. Most likely due to most of our membership being in the retired/elderly bracket which also accounts for the cantankerous attitudes I suppose.

Unfortunately, this is the only club (15 minutes from my house) within 100 miles.

I do have a couple of close nitro/electric flyer buddies who don't care what anyone flys and we try to arrange our fly times at the field when we know we can avoid the more 'mouthy' Nitro-Heads.

      We will survive.

Ask them to explain why they reckon so many nitro/gassers are switching over to electric.

I know there's usually some ribbing that goes on with these guys. One of my favorite barbs is when an electric noses over or something & comes back onto its wheels, or a quick kick of the prop uprights it, I say "Can't do that with a Nitro!!" as I taxi majestically back to the pilot's station rather than starting The Long Walk.

Never had a single reply. Just the other electric guys grinning.
We (in my club) can also fly during church hours - they can't.

Too, if you catch one who's been catty wiping down before putting the plane away, ask "How much a year do you spend on Windex & paper towels?"

If that's their game, learn to play it! <smiley image="smiley_wink.gif"/>

          Greetings Starhopper,

Indeed, to win one must play the game.

I only fly with a few friends and my uncle, we all fly electrics. Don't have to put up with club BS and A-holes that way, I don't want the drama. :)

Wow! Or should I say ow!
I mentioned that I found the airfield that the local group flies from, turns out they have three, two in nieghboring towns. This heckling is something I hadn't thought about. I too, prefer the mornings as the wind is usually absent or just a slight breeze, a rarity in Cody.
It would be nice to find one or two guys that were interested in getting together at that time as long as you woldn't have to put up with that BS!
