  • 3D Printed Horten IX Ho-229 (1680mm Wingspan, 2x50mm EDF)

    Hi All,

Wanted to share my most recent 3D printed project.

1/10th scale Horten IX (Ho-229). This is the V2 which was the only powered version to fly, and has a different inlet shape compared to the more well known V3. Compared to many other RC Hortens, this does not require thrust tube extension to fly. Instead it uses a small fin on the underside of the fuselage.

Unsure about the flight characteristics, I decided to design it for 50mms and make the model smaller. Though now having flown this, I definitely want to make a larger 70mm version in the future. It has working drag rudders, and can take-off in ~150ft on pavement.

Uses the Freewing T-33 nose strut , and Su-35 retracts/struts for the mains. Flies on 4S 3700mAH for about 5 minutes mixed flying.

    Wingspan: 1680mm
    Length: 749mm
    Wing Area:51.6 dm2
    AUW: 2800g

I made the files available for others to download:
This 1/10 scale Horten IX (Ho-229) was designed to achieve a high level of scale fidelity, including panel lines and raised panel detailing throughout the airframe. Unlike many other Horten IX EDF models, the use of clear thrust tube extensions is not required for proper flight behavior and instead, utilizes a small fin on the bottom of the tail to provide added stability. Build Volume Requirements: 220mm x 220mm x 200mm or 205x250x200. This was designed on the Prusa Mk2S Wingspan: 1680mm(66 in) Length: 749mm(29.4 in) Wing Area:51.6 dm2(800 in2) Full download contains both STLs and Gcodes. The Gcodes are specific for the Prusa i3 and for ABS and LW-PLA as the primary materials. Configuration files are included for ABS, LW-PLA, and PLA. Free assembly manual can be downloaded from my profile, via the free test pieces. https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/game/1-10-scale-horten-ix-ho-229-rc-model-jet-test-files-and-manual Flight Compilation Video: https://youtu.be/qpbO7p-Qf48 Short Take-Off and XRP Fans: https://youtu.be/dAdAIYLvW48 RCGroups Thread: https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?4079805-1-10-Scale-Horten-IX-Ho-229-%281680mm-Wingspan-2x50mm-EDF%29 Rev1: 2022-12-27 Updated Assembly Manual. This is very nice. I may need a 3d printer. Nice work.

Well done! It's good to see a viable Horten wing take flight.

Updated nose gear for scale appearance.

and more pictures of another completed model.

This forum seems to be more geared to ARFs, so unless people are interested in seeing more on this or future developments, I'll make this the last post for this plane.
