So today I decided to install a 4S 64mm 12-Blade setup in my LX SR-71 Blackbird. I was hesitant because my existing setup was a Don's Wicked. And if any of you are familiar with Don, you know his power systems are top notch. However, the allure of how she would sound on a twin 12-blade setup was too much so I purchased two Freewing 64mm 12-Blade EDF 4S Power Systems w/ 2836-3300kv Motors and two ZTW 45A ESCs from Motion. Don's setup will find a new home, possibly in a new LX Blackbird airframe. Always good to have a spare.
I installed the new setup today and took her out for a re-maiden. I mistakenly used the same 2x 3S 2200 setup I had with Don's setup, forgetting this was a 4S system. The results were predictable. She flew like a brick on Valium. I put an Admiral 4S 4000 in her and she woke up nicely. Still not as zippy as Don's setup, and I kind of expected that since twin 12-blades are not going to be as efficient as Don's perfectly balanced 5 blades, but it was still decent. The fans are not balanced so I will need to balance them.
The sound is good...Not as "wooooooshy" (I believe that's the technical term) as the 80mm or 90mm 12-blade sound but definitely better than 5 blades. The video below captures both flights.
I installed my Eagle A3 Super II gyro in her and WOW if there was ever a jet made for a gyro it's the Blackbird. You can visibly see the difference in the video when I switch her on in the first flight. The second flight (on 4S) it was on from the start.
