As for the nose gear weak spot, for me it was two fold. Just on the aft side of the steering servo, the plastic mounting tray is very thin. It cracked there and caused the support linkage to collapse. The second issue is that these support trays were glued from the inside of the air intake, likely as the halves of the model were being assembled. This puts the glue (which was very sparsely applied) in tension where it is weakest. Most other models would mount parts from before for that reason.

The small 3D printed support bracket in the RCG thread solves this by bracing the upper sides of the plastic mounts against the plywood battery tray, which is much more rigid.
Good information to know! I'll take my F-86 out into my shop and take a closer look at the weak spots on this model.

Have a ball at St. George!

    Cheers

F-86 photos from St George. 4 flights so far. Still getting the landings dialed in. Seems that good amounts of flap and airbrake and coming in power on are the way to go. 4 flights so far.

Beautiful pics of a beautiful plane, DeltaDart! Three things come to mind when I see your airplane: first, I like how you "metalized" it over the foam to make it look even more scale. Second, I like how you modified the gear doors so that when the gear is down, they are all retracted, like the real thing. And third, I really like the extra pains and time you took to get the speedbrakes angled downwards some when extended, like the real airplane looked. Fantastic!

St. George is obviously higher elevation than sea level, I think just under 3,000 feet or so, but that thinner air has to be respected when flying planes, big or small there. My elevation at Cody is 5,000 feet, so it is even more necessary to keep that in mind. I do the same thing you mentioned, flaps down, speed brakes out, and some power in all the way to touchdown or close to it. That seems to work for me with this plane. The narrow gear are a concern, but I only nicked a wingtip a little bit one time, and that was when it was almost stopped at the end of the runway after a landing. I was a bit too strong in trying to keep it from departing the runway and it was just going a bit faster than I I thought. It dipped the wing a bit and scraped the runway. Very minor and easily repairable damage to the wingtip. But I still kept it out of those nasty airplane-eating brambles that we have!

        Great job, happy flying!

I agree with davegee, your pictures are amazingly good.

          Superb build, Sir.

Thanks guys! Very happy with how it turned out. The sun glint off the aluminum going across that landscape really made it worth all the effort. Was hoping to get in more flights yesterday, but the nose gear door clevice broke on me. Didn’t have a spare with me, so it remained on the ground. Will have it replaced when it makes it back to TX.

Good headwork, DeltaDart. You made a good decision keeping it on the ground with that mechanical issue. Better to be safe than sorry, in my book.
Glad you had a good time and thanks for posting those pics!

So, with an event this weekend coming up, and my gear door order from FMS running far behind schedule, I decided to just make my own. So if anyone else needs it, here is the 3D print file I created for a spare nose gear door: https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/vari...vyCSIGKMf_MbPM 73p1Q5d3Col6PQYPsoF

Hi F106DeltaDart: have you done anything to dress up the nose of the HK B-17? For instance, when I had a Flightline B-24 years ago, someone had a flat photo of the interior nose section. So, when you had the clear nose cone place, it looked more realistic than just a black wall in the nose. Do you know anything that might work?
                      thanks,

                      davegee

Very cool! My Father, Ret. Colonel Joseph Romack, flew with “ Robbie Risner “ in Korea. They stayed lifelong friends. I have recently started back into the hobby. I have found and purchased a Freewing 80mm “Jolley Roger “ F-86. That was the F-86 my Father flew. After Captain Jolley rotated out of Korea my Father renamed it the Patricia II. I want to change it from the Jolley Roger to the Patricia II. I would like your help in obtaining the 336th Rocketeer decals. My Dad was a 24 yr old, just out of jet school, when he arrived in Kimpo. My Dad was often Robbie’s wingman and after a sortie, if they had fuel, they would dogfight each other over Kimpo AFB. I would appreciate any help that you could provide.
