  • 1400 mm P40 Warhawk or the 1700 mm P51

    Hi all,

I've been flying the 1600 mm Spitfire and looking to add to my inventory. If you had to pick one or the other, which would you go with? The P40 or P51.

I have the P-51 and love it, not a speed demon but a great flying plane with great presence in the air.

Man that's a toss up, I love P40s just because they are sorta rare, but to have a nice 1700mm p51 is a sweet prospect as well. One thing about them both is, fms always made great flying planes in my opinion, and the good thing is they always improve them and make them even that much better. If it were me I would go with the p40, just because they are kinda rare. And just as TI said don't expect and high speed with them, however they will both fly great and solidly in the air.

Thanks for weighing in Rifleman. Appreciate your opinion. I may have to break it to the wife that I need both. That's gonna cost me.

Yep, I love the P-40 and with the Warbird Charlie mod (putting the 1500 mm P-47 6s power system in it) that thing is amazing.
Really thinking of doing that with mine.

I think I would like to do the P40. Could you explain what you need to do to convert the P40 to 6s?

Just use the FMS 1500 P-47 Razorback 6S 4258-460kV power system.

MRC shows the P40 now comes with the upgraded 4258-460KV power system using a 70 amp ESC using a EC3 connector and 4S batteries. Is there any value in going to the EC5 and 6s system?

Personally, I think the upgraded system is plenty for this plane (I actually read it as 650kv). I have the 1450mm P-51 and with this motor and bigger ESC, the plane really flies with authority. My P-51 was modded a while back with a 6s motor and big ESC. The stock 4-blade prop worked the motor too hard and it would cut out before the flight was over from too high throttle activity for too long. I then went to a 2-bladed prop and the problem was solved. I could fly at blistering fast speeds the whole flight but I did not like the look of the 2-blade prop and the concern that the airframe could not handle that kind of power for too many flights. I went back to 4s using the upgraded motor and I'm very happy with the plane now.
As for the 1700mm P-51, I see that it is not in stock in many of the usual places and FMS has it currently listed with the old 300kv motor. I have the 1700mm Corsair and I found the 300kv motor to be under-achieving for a plane this size. Now that I've replaced it with the 360kv motor, the Corsair is what it should have been all along.
Performance wise, go with the upgraded P-40. Having said that, every hanger should have a Mustang.

Yes, sorry, I was jumping back and forth between web pages and got the motor wrong. Thank you for the feedback.

I have the P-40 and it is a great flying plane in stock trim. I have come to like it more than my stock 1400 FMS P-51. The P-47 powertrain mod would surely make it a rocket, but IMO it is a very good plane right out of the box.

To recap, the P40 now comes stock with the 4258-KV650 motor and 70A ESC with EC3 connector. Warbird Charlie recommends 4258-KV460 Brushless Outrunner Motor and 70A Brushless with EC5 connector. Warbird, is your opinion that the 6S system is still the one to go with over the new stock motor? What battery are you using in the 6S setup?

I would fly it stock see how you like it, then if you want a rocket powered P40 get the upgrade. :) you should be very pleased with the stock system.

We had three of them at Nefi, CB's Ryan's and mine and Charlie was leaving us in the dust. We actually lost site of it as it went vertical and kept on going, finally CB says,"Can you still see it? I better roll it over"
None of us could lay eyes on it until then, amazing!!
I believe he was using 4500's.
