Have you Heard??

The 1600mm A1 Skyraider returns in early 2015!!!
This is the massive Big Daddy of EPO Warbirds!!!

I really like mine in grey but, I'm hoping the bring back the camo version!!



This clip is from a while back showing the Starmax/BlitzRCworks release featuring good ol' Pete (wonder what ever happened to him) and will give you a great intro into this warbird (if you haven't already seen it)

Don't know yet if the new release will include any mods/upgrades. If they do, I hope they've replaced the pull-pull rear steering cable design for a push-rod system.

I just finished reading the latest (Dec. 12th, 2014) on the New A1 Skyraider.
Man, this plane was already a creampuff to fly but, they are revamping it and the upgrades are going to be awesome!! Like from 4S to 6S power System!!!

Here are a couple of excerpts from Alex at BH!! I'm not really sure who HSD is, do you know??

"I am happy to say that this model is coming back! We will be working in conjunction with HSD to bring out a new version that will have some changes. These changes will include a new tail wheel steering setup, a new rudder control configuration, use of metal e-retracts and the 6S power system! The canopy will be reworked for a more scale appearance, and a latch system will be added to secure the entire canopy section. There are some other changes that should be noticeable too such as the drop tanks and a different cowling. Even the servos are being upgraded to 12g metal gear servos."

"We are still working on a confirmed release date, but pictures will be posted as soon as they are available.
On a side note, the camouflage version has been confirmed as well. This model will return in the gray and camouflage color schemes that it was commonly available in."

Hey Rktr , HSD is a guy who use to work with one of the Companies , just not sure which , producing planes . Then went out on his own to start making products . They are to be a high quality plane like Freewing n FMS . I got this info from a conversation with Rich last week when we were on the phone . He is testing some jets for them now and is very excited with their products .

Love that big Skyraider, and it would be great if MRC did end up carrying this  line. My only drawback is the 6s power. I know that is a bonus for most, but dang, I am just start getting up to speed on purchasing some 4S batteries and having a few on hand. Now I am thinking about 6S batteries, and those babies get expensive fast.
I am sure I will eventually have some 6S planes, but right now, I am trying to stay with 4S and below.

I would have to agree with loneflier. While the new A1 coming out is a totally awesome plane, I am hoping
to find one that runs off 3 or 4S.  I have a nice cache of 3S batteries  and am ready to make the move
to a 4S plane.  These batteries are easier on the pocketbook.  
Someday I'll have one of those big planes, but for now I'm having a blast with these mid sized ones.

As I said before, I quit smoking to help fund this hobby, but I cant quit smoking enough to keep up with
all the planes I want to buy.  A friend of mine said to me   "too bad you don't have a cocaine habit to quit, You'd
be flying a real plane by now"  lol

I have to agree as well.

Although I'm really excited about the return of this warbird, the 6S power system will certainly not only ramp the cost of LiPo's but, I'm sure the plane itself will boast a hefty increase in price over the 4s/5s version.

While I currently own a few 6s LiPo's, I'm sure when the time comes I'll use that to justify taking the plunge on the warbird.
Unless of course they just get totally stupid on the price.

Well, if all holds true to course, we are only weeks away from the totally re-vamped 6 channel, 1600mm A-1 Sky Raider!!!

The latest delivery stat is mid-September!! Said to be available in the grey and camo schemes.

Thanks for the heads up Rocketeer. I really like that Skyraider, and I might just have to break my "no 6 cell planes" resolve and get that one! I have really been eyeing that 6 cell Carbon Cub as well. Saw one at the field last week, and she really flew nicely.

Hope your weekend is going well. It was a no fly day here. Too windy in the morning, and then it just poured rain this afternoon. Maybe tomorrow...

Agreed..... I really liked the way they cleaned up the Sky Raider.

I just got done finishing it. I received it Monday I think. I have not flown it yet. I did some airbrush word, installed sound system and have a coat of hard coat on it. Sorry about no pictures I will get some, or a maiden video sunday or both lol. Ok, on with the build and impressions stuff.

If you do not use their ESC which I did not, then you have to supply 7.4 volts to the control board. That really really messed me up. There is no directions that indicate any of this on the plane. I did accomplish melting the retract controller though and having to order a new one lol. Anyway jury is still out on their control board. My first impression is that its over complicated. The 7.4 volts only handles the retracts and the aileron led's. The retracts will not work without going through the retract controller. They do not have their own control board integrated like FMS or Eflight. You can put 7.4 volts to them all day and all you will get is a single cycle on initial power. Must have a retract control board/circuit board for them to work. There is no gear doors so no sequencing needed. The ESC that i am using is the tried and trusted FMS 85 amp. Its the older one that has the opto lead coming out of it. Unfortunately the max voltage from it is 5.5 volts so I could not use that to power the board. I ended up using a 2s LiIon battery that ironically was the battery i used to power a set of century jet retracts in a 30cc Skyraider. Ok enough with the irony.

Appearance is pretty good. The foam they use does not have all the dimples and that foam look like E-flight or FMS does. At least not all over. You can see some foam marks in places but most of the plane is smooth. It has air brakes coming off the fuse. I was going to try to use a y connection and put them with flaps. That did not work out. So, I put them on a separate channel. I had to actually take them off and readjust them because they was not closed at initial power up. Not that complicated of a task. You could just make sure they are closed and not hook them up if you do not want to waste a channel. They are definitely more for show than practically. Yes, the real one had them but still in a foam model this size, its more of a show thing.  Nice ordinance package and the way it attaches is much much much better than the FMS setup. The cockpit is a joke. Its just painted black with nothing in it. Well, there is a black seat thing sticking up. No pilot, not even a small cheezy instrument panel. I ended up slapping a FMS 1700mm P-47 cock pit kit in to it. I didnt do the best job in the world with it but it still looks better. It has SkyRaider Bob sticker as the pilot name. I left that, at least for now.  The motor is slightly smaller than the FMS 1700mm planes use. It is a 280kv motor. Prop is slightly smaller to go with it. It is a solid four blade prop. I think a FMS prop would fit but I did not try. I would try a 1400mm Corsair or P-47 size. Definitely not the 1700mm one. I say that because of the slightly smaller motor. I am afraid you would jack the amperage up trying to pull those larger props with the slightly smaller motor. I did think about installing a 300kv FMS motor on it some day. But, need to see if I can get it off and back to mother earth in the same piece first.

The control surfaces seem pretty good. Everything came pre-attached except the elevator and rudder.  There was no fuel tubing for the clevises at all. The clevises are a big upgrade from FMS stock clevises. Jury is still out on the servos. They do not chatter or buzz though. The inside of the fuse has plenty of room. The elevator and rudder and the air brake servos are all in the back of the bus. I think you can get to them by removing the air brake doors on the side and the one on the bottom of the plane. Did not investigate this alot. If you cant,then it becomes an is what it is thing if you ever need to get to them. No push pull design, it was all pushrod. I used a 5000MaH battery and that seemed to balance it perfect with the wheels down. I know I should do it with the wheels up but to make up for it I added 1/2 ounce of weight in a easy to remove spot on the nose.  I also balanced minus the prop and prop nut. I have a couple 5000 MaH batteries but i suspect that a 4000MaH might really need some weight added on the nose. You also have to remember I have an additional 2s 2000MaH battery next to the 6s as well. Thats all I have to report until Sunday night or Monday.

Thanks! By the way. I coated it with Modge Podge Hard Coat. No more minwax or epoxy for me. That is what I will be using. It dries to a harder coat than minwax and with just one coat. A couple coats and your right there with epoxy on hardness.
