Well, it figures. I work up the courage to buy one of these, spend hours personalizing it, then find out it's been discontinued. Now I'm terrified to fly it because I wont be able to get parts anymore (and I'm a frequent spare parts buyer if you get my drift). This is supposed to be fun right?! Actually, I can't wait to try this one out - it looks so cool on the ground I can't wait to see it in the air.
I highlighted the panel lines and dulled down the finish with a wash of black paint. The stock gunner had to go so I got another pilot and carved the cockpit foam to make him fit under the canopy. I thought the fixture on the fuse behind the gunner was horrendous so I did my take on the antenna array that I think it was supposed to represent. I cut away the foam inside the circle, leaving the cylindrical antenna head (painted gunmetal with misc wires and electrical looking things attached). The actual aerial, or whatever it's called, is a round section of plastic drink bottle with slices of metal tape attached.
The plane was begging for some ordinance and the Adam Bomb kit fit the bill perfectly. I carved some foam from the left wing to install a servo and a glued a plywood base for the drop mechanism to screw into (the plywood base also fits into a slot cut into the right wing.) The release sits right on the center line and works like a charm. I used an aileron push rod from an old UMX P 47 to link everything together.
I think I'm going to cut a vent in the bottom of the fuse since the scoop on front is functional but there's nowhere for the air to escape once it's sucked in.
I hope to keep this in the fleet for a long time, so I got some matching paint samples made up and will be refreshing my stock of Foam Tac prior to the maiden this weekend....
