  • FMS JU 87 Stuka - Discontinued?!

Well, it figures. I work up the courage to buy one of these, spend hours personalizing it, then find out it's been discontinued. Now I'm terrified to fly it because I wont be able to get parts anymore (and I'm a frequent spare parts buyer if you get my drift). This is supposed to be fun right?! Actually, I can't wait to try this one out - it looks so cool on the ground I can't wait to see it in the air.

I highlighted the panel lines and dulled down the finish with a wash of black paint. The stock gunner had to go so I got another pilot and carved the cockpit foam to make him fit under the canopy. I thought the fixture on the fuse behind the gunner was horrendous so I did my take on the antenna array that I think it was supposed to represent. I cut away the foam inside the circle, leaving the cylindrical antenna head (painted gunmetal with misc wires and electrical looking things attached). The actual aerial, or whatever it's called, is a round section of plastic drink bottle with slices of metal tape attached.

The plane was begging for some ordinance and the Adam Bomb kit fit the bill perfectly. I carved some foam from the left wing to install a servo and a glued a plywood base for the drop mechanism to screw into (the plywood base also fits into a slot cut into the right wing.) The release sits right on the center line and works like a charm. I used an aileron push rod from an old UMX P 47 to link everything together.

I think I'm going to cut a vent in the bottom of the fuse since the scoop on front is functional but there's nowhere for the air to escape once it's sucked in.

I hope to keep this in the fleet for a long time, so I got some matching paint samples made up and will be refreshing my stock of Foam Tac prior to the maiden this weekend....

Very nice. I know what you mean afraid to fly it. I have several discontinued planes that I kiss everytime they land without incident.
    Don't just fly--WREAK HAVOC!!!

Yes, unfortunately the Stuka has been discontinued by FMS. I'm not sure if it is FMS or Horizon making the call but many FMS and RocHobby planes have been discontinued recently. I'm really sorry. I'd love to see it continue but it is beyond my control. I'm guessing FMS or Horizon no longer sold enough to make production worthwhile.

I read or heard somewhere that German planes don't sell as well. Any way, I'm sure Horizon is just making space for a corsair, maybe a P51 or two

I like all kinds of warbirds german, Japanese, USA, all were a terror in the sky at the time even today. If your a history bug liking only one country is not a real historical person. You have to look at this through everyone's eyes what did what and who had the better edge. So do to this the Suka really needs to be made by flightline for sure 63" please.

And there's the crux of the whole situation. It doesn't matter how many people "like" a product, if they don't buy them, the sales numbers reflect that and if they don't sell enough of them, it's not destined to exist for long. As for making room for a Corsair or P-51, they've already got those in the inventory. Why would they add yet another one and dilute the existing sales of what they've got?

I agree with your logic whole hardheartedly. But ya just wait, lol. We will see more and more of these different variations, different size. They have been beaten quite literally to death. I grew up with P-51's. washing them, fueling them, etc. There beautiful planes, but honestly I'm not sure if I'll ever own one. But new companys just have to bring their, "NEW" better one to the market.

Ya know the Stuka's were some of the very first Cox U-control models made available. I had one as a kid, I think it might have been my very first flying airplane model. I think I was 8 years old. Took it out hooked the control lines up to the plane, (I missed the guides in the wing) took off and promptly split it in half.

It's sad to see them go for sure I'm pretty sure they will be back though, and I'm certain there are still a few hold overs if you look around a bit.

Horizons newest P51 is exactly the same as Blondie except for a firmware update on the receiver and a different paint scheme.. Blondie replaced a very similar P51, Dallas Doll, about a year after it was released. Horizon has gotten risk averse and Motion is kicking their ass right now.

Ya know I get that. But it's really hard to hit a home run, if you never swing the bat.

A friend of mine also had one back in the early 60's. It was a Christmas gift from his older brother. I was so jealous. He had no interest and never flew it. I am not sure what happened to it.
